Something doesn't reconcile. Assuming that nobody has ever deleted a character, it doesn't add up. A lot of early closed beta characters were wiped completely on resets, or deleted to make room for a new creation.

The pilot/merc simply gets moved to a "hidden" NPC corporation named "Doomheim" where it remains. So yes CCP can resurrect 10 year old pilots if they want to since no character is ever truly deleted (except maybe some cases). PS. Feel free to discuss ask questions about stuff like that in the dustboard thread to make it easier to follow /c
