After speaking with quite a few players as been in the beta since last year, most players seem to have no interest in the story, role playing aspects of DUST, or even know what race their main character is even though they picked it. Just makes me wonder if this disinterest is a problem stemming on the CCP side or the player side. In any case, I think the role playing/story aspects will be what's keeps a good deal of players playing after full release so it seems strange to me so few players seem to actually care about it. I do know one thing for certain; CCP needs to do an original story based Merc battle because the last one looked like any other Ambush, including the map. The most original one I seen so far is the Quafe one and that's because there were guys in purple suits running around on a standard map. That small change though at least made it feel somewhat fresh. Plus, the Quafe suit bonus was nice although I'll probably never use them. |

The problem is right now personally I feel I'm not part of anything EVE related. Yeah I can have a friend drop an Orbital strike from EVE in a corp match...and that's it for me and EVE...for DUST mercs and EVE.
There's some people that like the fictional stuff and role play with the merc contracts, but personally I don't care. Fighting for districts or fighting to defend one is what appeal to me.
Merc contracts... lol. |

You just need some imagination to create your own backstory.
I imagine my merc is an accountant called Kevin, he's asleep on the night-bus after an unsuccessful night on the town. Whilst on the bus he's dreaming that he is in fact a woman called Deborah, who's playing Dust on her PS3. Simple. |

I don't know ANYTHING about story-related Merc battles or the story itself because I never hear of them. Also, these merc battles never occur when I'm available due to timezone differences. |

You have to understand that even in EVE, the story is very very player driven. The universe has a background story, but generally speaking very little happens that in NPC controlled. If anything most of the story happens in Low and Nullsec when players are capturing systems and stabbing each other in the back...THAT where the game gets interesting.
However if you want to take a look at some of the existing story and lore, here are a few links
https://dust514.com/media/fiction/
https://dust514.com/beta/news/ (Some of the posts are story related)
And at the risk of sounding like everyone else, this is a beta, and although the story is interesting, we're more here for the gameplay than anything else. I'd rather they focus on that, for now, instead of story events. |

I wasn't meaning to say CCP should do more story events; just that if they were going to do story events, to at least make them original instead of an exact repeat of standard public match play. Anyway, maybe when PVE is implemented, there will be more story based aspects involved. IDK though. |

Ah, well if anything it would be something along the lines of capturing specific planets that are focal points in New Eden, such as old Caldari Prime. |

If youre not apart of eve then there really isn't any reason for the dust ppl to care about all of the background storylines. However, they will eventually get to know it with faction warfare and drawn into nullsec politics when we get the tools. Give it time.
I would like to see more storyline events, but nothing like what normal games do. We the players are the main story and i'd rather not have a pve mode where we are running the same instance 100 times to kill the same boss over and over. However, i do have hope that the rogue drone pve thing will be fun and dynamic. |

Meh, I recommend those to all the sci-fi buffs I know anyway. They're both pretty good books. |

I couldn't care less about the "story" of Dust/EVE, because unlike other storylines of games, it has no significance in how the game is played. I care about gameplay. They can make up all the stories they want, but until it has relevance, I just don't care.
The big MMO aspect this game will have for me is when planets/etc can be taken and fought over without consent, and once the player market open up. |

That's a good point. There is supposedly lots of guerilla warfare on the surface.
Of course, there is also a Caldari Leviathan titan (a ship with a Death Star gun) in orbit threatening to nuke the biosphere if the Gallente Federation tries to take back the surface. |

Pretty much this, theyre is just no reason for players to care , plus you have to look the lore up on the internet to even know anything about it . It seems like quite a few eve players dont really care about the back story judging by the eve forums too ( the fiction section only has 21 pages) . |

THing about CCP and it's products EVE and DUST, and I'd bet same applies to World of Darkness, is that CCP don't create NPC storylines 'quests' and stuff to do as in other MMO's.
This is because they made consious decision that rather than waste resources on content that gets devoured by players more rapidly than developers possibly can produce it, CCP has opted only to create a backdrop and tools for players to create the content by themself.
Sandbox(players create conten and storyt) vs Themepark(developer create content and story)
Also one above comment pointed out that in EVE alot of the 'story' and lore is in written format, chronicles books, etc. I would expect this to be same for DUST. And I expect this DUST PvE mode to be something similar to EVE's missioning, Incursions or Sleepers in wirmhole space. |
