newb here
As this is beta, i though i would leave my feedback of how i am enjoying the game and my grumps. firstly though a bit of background. I have not played FPS for about years and dusted down the PS3 to play dust514 because i am an on and off eve player and wanted to give it ago.
Skills and fittting. i obviously had a better understanding than new non eve players about how it all worked, saying that i have not played eve for about 1 year and some sort of guidence would not have gone a miss. by searching the forums i found some good advice from the comunity but realistically this is a CCP game so you skill how you wish - it would be handy if there was a guide on what core skills are adviced ect and what you should be looking at getting for which directions so people do not waste those important early skill points. fitting though is easier than eve, but i would still have a guide on what items are related to which stats for the non eve based players.
first battles, well i expected to learn a fair bit from them and i did, not being used to FPS i think that for me it was alot more of the basics than most such as basic controls and battlefield awareness. i expected to get farmed and i did get farmed without mercy . in all honesty i would have preffered to have the battles without heavy drop suits and veicles of any kind as my one man human wave tactics against targets i had no idea i could not realistically take out was a bit evil . saying that it was not enough to make me rage quit, but i could see it having that effect on some.
learning curve the learning curve has been a little steep imo due to the wide range of SP and gear players have in current battles. if you do not adapt quick its frustrating. your not rambo and although skill helps against good fits your still cannon fodder, found that either by acting in a support role or playing more so for the objectives i could be more useful than trying to lead an assault. using stealth allowed me to make more of an impact but even taking heavys by suprise from the rear i was still mowed down which hurt my pride as no matter what skill i used i was all but useless against them. when playing with the starter fits i found out i could kill the buggies with the AV set up .......but tanks were and still are another problem.
Buying gear + skilling. coming from eve i had a fairly good idea that its not what you have, but the support that go with the items which make a difference. there is little point in having ther best gear if your suport skills are poor as you will just make each loss cost more. for this reason i went about things in a rather differently than i think alot of people would. skill up on the support skills and not going for the higher tier weapons i think makes me more affective and saves alot of isk and players should be directed to lvl this way imo.
Tanks. soon after finding out that my starter AV fit was only good for buggies and drop ships i invested SP in swarm launchers and AV grenades which i can use tier items for both. ok its not great but can help against malitia tanks. tbh i think tanks are very cheap for their reward as in eve every little bit extra cost a fair bit more which does not seem the case with tanks. tbh the problem with tanks in public matches is that its not possible to counter them affectivly without comunication which is not in place in these battles which makes top end tanks a game breaker in public matches. what can a newb like myself do besides try and fight as far as possible away from them as they steam roll the game farming everyone they see. when i looked on the forums you see alot of tanker saying they are not OP and the sugestions of how to counter are basically not posible unless your in a reasonably good SP sqaud on coms speced in AV. newbs for the most part don't want to invest so many SP's in AV and beyond that how many of us are in squads? the other sugestion is get a tank of your own.....we are newbs and have alot more pressing things to spend our isk and skill points on so they are saying be farmed and stop complianing. their points on how to counter may be valid for higher end players and i am not saying that the top end tanks are OP, but in the public mixed SP matches filled with newbs like myself they ruin the game. so imo limit the tanks to malitia tanks only which can be countered without as much organisation needed.
Me becoming L33t ok i have got 1.2 mil SP's so its not there yet, but i am learning and have even topped the score board a couple of times int he battles i have been in. Dust514 may not be forgiving or the most simple game out there, but its a great challenge with alot more content to come i hope. learning where you fit in during each battle which is dictated by your skills and set ups is what i see as the best way to sucess and the trick is to read the forums like hell when your new. its like a PC MMO in that respect but its a PS3 game so i can't see everyone doing that so there needs to be alot more information accessable ingame besides the snipits you see during loading.
Moving forward being that i only play dust514 on the PS3 ill have to get myself the coms system for it ASAP and then ill join a corp, learn what i can off the vets and add to my gameplay as i evolove as a player.
thanks again CCP for another great game in the making.

Advise: You can take down a heavy before they can kill you if you know how. Get out of their range, ARs have more range and accuracy; use that to your advantage. Laser rifles are also great for destroying heavies at long range, but remember that laser rifles are terrible at close range. A good mass driver user can also go toe to toe with an HMG heavy. Cooking grenades (hold it for a few seconds before throwing it to reduce fuse time) can also be useful.
Get a militia heavy from the militia section of the market (militia items don't require skills), and put a militia forge gun on it. Forge guns can be much more effective to fight tanks. If its a shield tank (the Caldari ones), than use flux grenades, those do like 1000 shield damage.
I strongly suggest that you at least try every vehicle type, every weapon type, every suit type, etc. It will not only give you a better glimpse of what the game has to offer, but you have to try something to be sure its OP; you can't make good judgement if you only experience the power of something, but not the costs and weaknesses that go with it. About heavies specifically, sure they're very deadly, but they're slow, can't carry any equipment, and are by far the most expensive dropsuit type to use. Try playing as a heavy yourself, and as a tanker yourself.
My opinion: It would be unfair to limit tank use to militia since there are players with prototype swarm launchers and prototype forge guns able to easily destroy well-fitted tanks. It would be unfair to accommodate players who don't want to skill into AV properly at the expense of vehicle users. |

Infantry don't invest in AV because they have to choose. Tankers don't, they can kill anything. They don't need get to a supply depot to adapt, or die and spend a clone. Tankers just roll over everything. They never adapt. Because they are at the top. Right now, as things stand.
Eventually folks will have the SP to have AV too, but will still need an Supply Depot or spend a clone... Imbalanced when comparing one player to another. However, when comparing Corp to Corp, things change.
Back to OP, definitely follow Wolf, try out level one of everything to see what you like. I did it on alts, as I didn't have enough points yet. |

thanks for the helpful advice, the limiting of tank use to malitia tanks was more so ment for newish lvl player battles - i fully agree they should be an end game product. lets be fair when the game goes live and we are fighting for the eve corps for lucrative contracts i hope to see as much high end stuff on the battlefield as possible.
when its random matches i do think its a good idea to have some "limited" battles for the new players to learn their trade or we may not get as many players staying with the game. |
