Going to start out one tomorrow(stupid 10 hour delete timer.) and just wanted to catalog thoughts on it.
picking artificer, that means I get some logi skills right off the bat, and SMG(not the best, but serviceable in a firefight as suppressing fire) and a kit for acting as the team medic.
Misc. tips I've read:
first skill I want to max is weaponry, correct?
second is to pick a weapon of choice(my choice is the Mass Driver) and put a level into it so I can use the entry level version?
next order of business is to simply play a few matches, getting used to the weapon, possibly just using the starter kits to accumulate enough money to fund for when matches turn sour and I lose some decent gear in the process? Also to accumulate SP.
next spend of SP is in basic logi skills(prereqs for things like injectors, hives, and repair tools)?
and after those are to respectable levels(I can use all base pieces in a kit) start focusing on survival/utility(cpu/pg upping) skills?
that sound about right? or should I reverse those last two? |

That's pretty much the rundown for any class you plan to play as.
I will say this though: Starting as Artificer is kind of "meh" skills-wise.
You get a free Logi loadout with a free rep tool which is alright but the Arbiter (sniper) gets better shield base starter skills and the Sentinel (heavy) gets better armor base starter skills and a free heavy and forge gun BPO starter outfit.
The only question is what's more ideal for you to start with personally. If it's only the free rep gun then go for Artificer, if it's Shield or Armor base skills go for one of the other two.
Honestly, the [SMG] skill for logis is just an insult, as if they expect us to either be complete team support or just die. |

heeeeey! i've gotten like 4 kills with the smg. and 28 or so deaths in firefights. at least I figured out not to use the sights with the things. its better to just hipfire at them.
but yeah, starting fresh tomorrow, though, might be a sniper starting loadout now, as I prefer shields to armor since I don't need to worry about needing a special module or another medic to regen shields. |

Armor Repairer (L module) and related skill Armor Repair Systems. Many a-logi's best friend. Speculation that the skill also increases your repair rate with your tool as well though I'm not sure personally.
You'll want all the skills for both eventually to maintain survivability but the passive armor skill is open from scratch.
The passive shield increase skill (Shield Control) is locked by many prerequesits but the Arbiter gives you 3 levels of Shield Boost Systems and you need 4 to get Shield Control unlocked.

It's all up to you... I spec'd Arbiter but only because I didn't care about my starter skills.
Honestly, I have no trouble with SP caps and ISK so personally I kind of wish I'd gone Sentinel just to get that free Heavy Suit and Forge AV suit but that's a really small benefit compared to the best starting shield skill set in the game on the Arbiter (in my opinion).
You get a wasted Sniper Rifle skill but the Artificer SMG skill is a waste too.
If I had to say for anything, unless you're going to be a heavy and need a constant free militia grade suit, the Arbiter is the best starting class in the game just for the strong skill base.
Starter Classes Skills and Suits Good conversation here on the topic.
