Played a few games of Slay to get an LAV recently and was reminded again of something I was really looking forward to in Dust 514. That zoomed out strategic perspective where you are moving around armies to control territory and decimate your foe.
When I first played a few games a little less than a year ago I kind of assumed that from the zoomed out perspective Dust would play like slay. Still hope some of the same general principles make it into the big picture game.
Newberry infantry can take any undefended territory.
Highly trained infantry beats newberry infantry.
Turrets beat infantry.
Tanks beat infantry and turrets.
Mechs beat everyone. And then you run out of money.
When you don't have enough money or units to maintain your territory rogue drones take over.
Newberry infantry beats rogue drones.
And that we will have the opportunity battles for control of territory to use use a much wide range of tactics, like cutting off supply chains, isolating enemies from resources, placing troops in strategic locations and leaving other areas relatively unprotected while they generate income, etc. |

Then you introduce land based Av and anti tank fit tanks and the pyramid falls apart. |

When you log back onto Dust you should be able to assign it to your character once you have entered the redeem code into ps store. |

And all the while people cry out in the game room "OMG THIS GAME IS TOO HARD!"
*facepalm*

Were not all as strategically sound as you are.

No seriously, map 6. Connect all the capitols near the bottom in the first turn, then fortify the left and top capitols. As you start to fill in and move to the safe corners of the map, make sure you send tendrils of troops out to continually cut large nations in half to break up supply lines. Only use Infantry and Spec ops, there's no reason for tanks or mechs. |

Not to mention orbital supply lines unless the whole planet is blockaded
That is also very exciting, Dust can have a kind of fractal geometry in three dimensions (rather than a 2 d pyramid) where strategies and counter strategies proliferate in a way that just isn't possible on a game board.
It is great that one player's talents or effort can change the outcome of an entire battle in Dust. I am liking the idea of planetary blockades. That would be an awesome Dust Eve integration. Just having the option as a Dust player to hire blockade runners and smugglers to bring vital supplies, weapons, even clones to the districts where battles are being fought would be awesome.
Also, with Slay the idea is to take over all available territory and win the game. But that is the last thing you would want to facilitate in Dust.
I did play a game of Slay where I lost fairly early on, but the AI was locked in a three way stalemate that took about 15 to 20 minutes to play out. Stalemates are another thing you would want to design against in Dust. Also, in Slay, the best strategic move is usually to take over undefended territory and avoid head on confrontation with the enemy troops.
A lot of these ideas about how territory control in Dust would be handled were discussed in great detail this thread.
But the idea of combining the top down view from far away with the in your face first person view from the front lines is a win. Hope we see some more of this type of thing in game in the next updates, and can't wait to see how it all pans out going forward. |
