While I wait for the new content to download in Dust, figured I would post this 'trick' that you can do with your controller (the product is old news and I'm sure you all know about it, but for Dust it has relevant use).
I present, the thumbstick renob http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66/Leukotic/IMG_renob_3891_zps4c7fdf4c.jpg
Yup, you've heard about these I'm sure, maybe some of you use them. When I first heard about these ages ago, I thought they were a joke and useless. But after getting fed up with Dusts horrible aiming, I got desperate to find a solution (or slight relief) to the bad aiming mechanics any way I could.
I have been using a different version of this for exactly a week now (the classic, which was cheap but has the concave shape like a 360 controller thumbpad), but even with the concave thumbpad, it has made a significant difference for me.
The one in the picture above is one I got today, which is convex shaped like the PS3 controller thumbpads (and it's a tad bit longer than the classic too).
I would recommend anybody who has any kind of problem with Dusts aiming or just wants to improve, to give these a try. It felt weird for the first couple of matches, but I caught on quick and now I don't even notice the difference in height (but I do notice the ability to aim with a bit more precision). If I take these off and try to aim, that is when I notice the massive difference they make. It's like night and day.
Here is a simple illustration of what is happening when you make the sticks longer. Imagine if you glued a broomstick to your PS3 thumbstick. Now imagine moving the stick all the way to the left and right. At the bottom of the stick (the default PS3 stick height), the distance between each end may be a inch or two, but if you measure the distance at the top of the broomstick, it will have moved several feet.
Now imagine trying to play using the top of the broomstick, you would have insane precision cause even if you move the stick 8 inches in one direction, it will only have moved a fraction of that in regards to the default stick height.
This, with the added height, you get two main benefits:
- One, you can physically move the stick more (than stock) while making smaller in-game movements (so you can be a bit more twitchy with the controls and it won't be as drastic).
-And two, the right stick becomes easier to move (think leverage).
No this is not a cure-all for aiming poorly, nor will it make you some kind of invincible beast in the game. But the way I see it, as with many things in Dust, even a slight advantage adds up. I got mine on Amazon, the convex shaped one shown in the image above, is called the SNIPR version (more expensive than the classic though). Not going to list the brand name of this product as I don't want to advertise like that, but a search for "thumbstick extenders" on Amazon will point you in the right direction.
Also keep in mind the different types, the SNIPR is the longest, and is one of two variations that has a convex shape to it. (the only other convex shaped one is the CQC version, and that offers the shortest extension). The rest are all just different variations of the classic, mainly just different colors, styles, etc.
Oh and if any of you use these, chime up! Would be interested to hear what others think of them and if they work for people like they have for me. |
