Wouldn't it be cool to have Day/Night cycles in Dust? Considering planets are going to be persistent. |

+1,but they kind of have this already. The missions spawn with different times of day, and, at least on earth, the sun's position doesn't change much during the length of a mission.
Those paying attention will notice that we never have actual night missions, just dusk. Considering how dark the maps are during this time, I vote for some form of night vision prior to true night missions. |

I thought more about how the terrain is different for every planet giving the defenders that own the planet the advantage. So you send scouts during the night to map out the area, get the location of installations and get out before the enemy knows that you're even there. Later you're more prepared to assault the planet with all the intel you gathered. Which also makes me want a Black Ops dropsuit. |

I think it'd be awesome if the time of day for the match was the same as server time. If it is 0300 server time, then you've got a night match, if it's 1400 server time, then you're fighting in daylight. |

It would be nice, but not gonna happen due to the fact that the planets in new eden don't rotate. For there to be a day/night cycle, the planets need to turn. Maybe one day they will make it so they do, but until then it won't happen. |

Its not like CCP is simulating the sun hitting the planet from AU's away, its just a light source. I don't care if its night time in Dust but in reality the area we're playing in, in EVE is facing the sun. The "This is more doable" comment is exactly what I meant, only maybe it should be faster because players will have to wake up midnight to attack at dawn for example. Everyone should be given an equal chance. |

Have to admit i do like night battles.
However in reality considering how many planets we are meant to be fighting on eventually, i would find it very odd if every planet was locked into the same day night cycle, just drawing from real world, planets would have differant timed orbits and days etc, so would make more sense if it was more a random spread of day and night battles.
By all means have a day/night 24 hour cycle for each planet, but have them seeded at random times of day. So you may be fighting on one planet in a day time battle, an hour later your on a differant planet thats night time etc.
But then If districts are spread all over a planet, you could be fighting day and night battles on the same planet within a matter of minutes in any case.

Good point, why not assign each planet a TZ and then have a "GMT" for that planet conform to the current conditions for that TZ IRL?
Then for different districts on the same planet, you'd just need to know what planetary TZ it was in that district and compare it with the IRL time in the "GMT" district. |

I didn't mean to come across as an ass if that's how it sounded lol, but referring to the 'sun simulation' thing.......technically the light source IS simulated. When we get the star map back, take a look and you will see that all planets are in dark/light depending on where the sun/star is for that star system. So if you're fighting on the dark side of a planet it would make no sense to be fighting during the day unless the planets are in rotation. I just like being technically logical is all |

Considering the number of planets and systems not all of them are going to be synced nor would mapping them all to static cycles likely be worth the development run time. The basic idea however is quite a good one and I concur, as such I'd suggest the following.
CCP introduce more diversity in the lighting and day/night time rendering of maps allowing "time of day" to be one of the dynamically generated features of a map upon loading a match.

Just change the lighting on the maps to make it look like it's in the middle of the night. on some maps, at a random way. |

Yeah i was thinking something like that. You have New Eden Time (GMT) then local planet time, which could be shown somewhere simply enough i guess with a 24 hour clock so you know if you'll fight in night or day etc.
But overall yeah they should deff be random, not every planet should be on the same time of day at all times, that would be lame imo

EvE planets have years length in there stats. Day length would also need to be set.
Planets in our solar system vary from about 10 hours to 248 days. So it would be realistic to set them to what ever they wanted for game play and to fit already made background writing. Most should probably be near earth day length on temperate. This would let them just assign a time offset to each district, rather then tracking the exact number of rotations at that planets speed.
EvE planets have eccentricity and period stats, this would tell us the severity and length of the seasons. would be great for districts having winter and summer seasons.
When we get barren planets, it would be cool to have some odd ones, where some areas are always day or night do to day and year of same length(like the earth's moon), or a 5min day on fast spinning planet so it changes couple times in a match.
This type of thing is cool, but could wait for expansion. We need the core gun game, market, maps, more weapons, game mods first. Down the road day/night attack as part of strategy would be great. |
