I am certainly not the first to suggest it and probably won't be the last...
Pilots and drivers should gain WP for all NON-COMBATANT passengers they are ferrying around.
Basically, tank drivers gain enough WP as it is and have no non-combat passenger slots anyways.
I suggest a puny +5 WP per 10 seconds per passenger. A full minute would be a mere 30 WP for one passenger and 90 for three, which is the current passenger max on the DSs. Sounds like it'd be a whole heap by the end of the match but when you think about it, most passengers ditch without even spending 30 seconds in the vehicle in question.
A 15 minute match with 3 passenger in your DS the entire match would yield 1350 WP. That is pretty high but again, who has EVER had 3 mercs on board doing nothing for an entire 15 minute match? A tank driver can whallop that score in 15 minutes of killing mayhem.
I'm seeing tank drivers going 27-0 with two corp mates gunning and all three are sitting at 1.5k to 3k WP by the end of the match from vehicle kills and assists. I've seen kinda chumpy tank drivers go 10-0 with 1200 WP. I've only been in two matches with DS pilots who had scores above 1k WP...ever AND they were both skirmishes.

This sounds pretty good. I'm a logi, not a pilot, but I've seen how much of an investment a DS is and I hardly see any in the skies. I get WP's for leaving a nanohive on the ground, give the pilots some love. Supposedly fixes are in the pipeline, maybe you've guessed one? |

I'm thinking this is on CCPs mind, yes.
Medics gain triage points and revive points.
AV guys get points for aiding in vehicle destruction.
Like you said, all a guy needs to do to gain 70 or 80 points for doing jack is drop a Nanohive.
I've gained a full 250 for dropping Drop Uplinks.
Grunts get 25 for hitting a guy with a few stray bullets before he gets killed.
Yet, the sole source of points for a LAV driver or DS pilot is vehicle kill assists, which are far more difficult to gain than vehicle kill assists in a tank.
No WP means far fewer SP and ISK gains and dropships are freaking expensive. I don't think a DS with a mobile CRU gets spawn points like a Drop Uplink.

DS with CRU does not get points. DS can only get kill assists but unlike tank, our gunners can be shot out. Also hovering still to let them aim generally means death. (For gunners, passengers, or the whole ship) And yeah its pricey
Worth it for a few risky assists? |

It's not worth it at all. Infantry get WP for infantry stuff, medics get WP for medic stuff, AV get WP for AV stuff, pilots get shafted. I've seen all of one DS in a week and a half. I'd love to drop onto a letter from a DS, there just isn't any incentive for the pilots. |

I started a fresh alt three weeks ago and put everything into vehicle and turret skills, to try out the non-militia DS. They are too expensive for a new player to use, which is fine, but they are quite difficult to fly as they have no retro engines or stabilizers of any kind (who makes a troop dropship without some kind of landing gear at least?). Even if I had wads of cash to throw away on unlimited DSs, there is little or no motivation to get really good at flying one.
You literally feel like you are wasting your time flying it. You end the round 0/0 with 60 points from two vehicle kill assists IF you don't get fragged sometime throughout the match.
Like my OP says, there are very gifted pilots out there who (probably with stable corp mates as gunners) put up some impressive WP...but they are so few and far between it is ludicrous. Without stable corp mates willing to risk all with you to be your gunners, though, or peeps on comms to encourage to stay in the gunner seats (or bail out when needed) it is basically impossible to develop a pilot character.
The effort it takes to learn to pilot and the ISK and SP it costs to fit worthwhile ships and build a decent pilot character is comparable to the effort it takes to build a good tank driver...yet good tank drivers are almost all reward and little fear and good DS pilots are fractionally useful as a troop insertion method and all but useless as a gunnery platform.
In my experience, I spend 1/3 of a match flying and 2/3 of a match performing triage on people just to get a few measly WP. Needs a fix fo' sho'. |
