Regular, old fashioned hatch and lever style bombs for the dropship. A part of warfare since flight was invented, yet completely overlooked as a method for dropship pilots to gain kills and therefore WP.
I'm not even asking for some high tech maverick missiles or anything, just a bomb bay with, say, 8 bombs that you drop over a target. Gravity and motion could carry the bomb off target, just like a Merc jumping out of a drop going full speed.
Drop pilots don't gain WP for anything but kill assists (I realize the LAV drivers also don't, but LAVs are easy to drive and very freaking cheap) and it would be nice to see such an expensive rig and one with a high learning curve to boot do more than fly almost casually around the air looking for loners for their gunners to pick off. |

That would not be for dropships but for another flying vehicle because bombing doesn't fit the role of a DS. https://dust514.com/universe/vehicles/
More flying vehicles will come in the future and so will WP for dropships doing stuff like having people spawn inside. Hopefully that'll be soon since there hasn't been new content for at least 4 months. |

Yeeeaaaa....
I get that its a DROPship and therefore should be meant for dropping infantry via insertion. The problemo with that (which I mention in another recent thread I started) is that pilots have no reason to ferry anyone atm. Maps are generally small enough that people can spawn within 15 seconds of the action and ferrying people gives the pilot no benefits other than helping their team team win (which, again, they barely do considering the relatively low travel times into combat). An increase in passenger capacity and a WP bonus for ferrying and I would probably rethink this suggestion.
I am also aware that there will be other vehicles and probably aerial assault vehicles. |

Dropping a squad behind enemy ranks is quite a bombshell in itself, to be honest. I'll admit, there's not much 'ferrying' going on due to the compacted map sizes, but its more 'positioning'. Get a squad of four snipers on top of the enemy to thin the ranks. And if you find four heavies willing to be dropped on an enemy CRU... Well. Who needs kill streaks when we can drop packages like that.
I fear the fact that dropships are packed with explosives could be exploited somehow. I can imagine the thread headings: "Multi million ISK tank blown to bits by kamikaze dropship. Japanese take over the skies?"
Not to mention a cargo hold full of explosives would mean swarm launchers simply have to cause a spark to send the whole thing up in flames. |

A dropship is a support vehicle, just like an helicoptor.
When I see an army helicopter with guns, it usually has Miniguns mounted to the thing. I would vote for a mountable HMG on that thing. dropping bullet shell on the ground bellow would look quite nice.
Since CCP foxfour like visual stuff: HMG on dropship Gunner view
Just give the gun a high CPU usage so you can have a destroyable dropship and you'll get something you can at least kill with. Assist WP to the pilot is a necessity, same for mobile CRU spawn, since we got negative WP when we crash with someone onboard.
"I flew in my DS for the complete game, dropping folks on objectives, making our team go for a sure win. I got shot by a tank right at the end...-200 WP because I killed 4 of my team mates. Last in the board, 0/1, very few WP, if not 0."
Dropship are vulnerable since they are without cover except from a few buildings Forge, launcher and tanks smiles when they see one, they are easy shot down They cost alot, except the militia paper version. They cant counter attack anything. |

Medics are support infantry but they still get WP for kill assists, triage, revival and their own kills.
Pilots are support transporters who only get kill assists when (or if) their gunners get kills. Their sole form of WP gain relies on other people not completely sucking on the guns, which is a shoddy prospect at best.
I started another thread concerning transport WP, which I feel is crucial to making playing a career pilot a viable option.
Should a system like I propose in the other thread be implemented, I wouldn't give a crack if they added a weapon for pilots...but the major point here is that pilots need some tangible in-game reward for flying their ships whether it be a gun of their own or points for transporting other players. Spare me the "helping the team" missives, since EVERY other class in the game gets WP for "helping the team." |

Perhaps DS pilots should get an assist bonus (like a Logi's "guardian" award) for WP awarded to passengers for one minute after the mercs leave the ship?

Somehow missed this post...
I'm not overly attached to my bombs idea, to tell it true. The birds are hard enough to fly without trying to aim at stuff as well.
My ultimate point is that pilots get no kills and kills are worth +50 WP. Every class in this game EXCEPT pilot gain WP for pursuing their primary function. Any infantry with an equipment slot gets various points for simply dropping a module. Dedicated medics can go 2/6 on a round but end with 1300 WP. Tanks **** everything for maximum kills and kill assists and whopping WP scores. I once killed a guy right before he got into his freshly spawned tank, hacked it and went on a 12/0 1400 WP killing spree WITH NO EXPERIENCE DRIVING A TANK AT ALL.
Pilots NEED some form of WP gain outside of gunners slowly racking up kills, especially since DSs are made of papier mache. A infantry drop WP or something. Bombs would give them a shot at kills besides the ridiculous and absurd "crushing death from above" dynamic pilots got going on now...
I agree that infantry insertion should be the primary function of a DS pilot (or ONLY function of a DS pilot). A team win is simply not enough reward for the risk when ANY OTHER CLASS gains WP for doing that voodoo that they do do... |
