Hello!
I would like to start this post off stating that I know these things have probably been discussed in other threads - many of which are probably buried somewhere within the forums and can be found with a simple search. But I thought I would try to be nice and compile a list of a 'tips' that I have figured out either on my own or from other people throughout my first week or so of playing Dust.
Also - Not only am I a noob to Dust 514 but I am also a noob to first person shooters in general. The last first person shooters I really played a lot were Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64. I've played a few others over the year but never really stuck with them. When I heard about Dust 514 I thought I would give it a try. I love Eve Online, I just don't have the time to play MMO's - especially not one as in depth as Eve. I am still no professional when it comes to Dust or first person shooters but I can feel that I am finally getting better.
Tip #1 - WAIT TO BE HEALED. This is important in both game modes but especially important in Ambush. If you die and there is a medic nearby who can heal you (usually a note will appear saying 'Standby - Triage unit in the area' or something of the sort. It's very frustrating (at least for me) when I see somebody needs help and I start to run to them only for them to disappear within a second. I know sometimes it does it automatically but I also know a lot of times players just spam the respawn button - wanting to get back onto the battlefield as soon as possible. At least I did when I first started.
In both modes there is a limited number of clones each army has. This number is important in both game modes but especially important in Ambush because teams start out with less. If you get healed instead of respawning it does not waste a clone (as far as I can tell). In my experience so far if my team has a couple of medics running around healing people, we usually win because we are using less clones.
I am an assault/medic. I primarily focus on killing people but will nearly always run to heal somebody if they're nearby and fallen.
Tip #2 - IF YOU CAN'T KILL, HEAL. You're pretty much important. Even if you suck at killing people you can still be important. Use the medic starter class and heal people. As I stated above - having a medic in Ambush is especially great but I have also played games in Skirmish where we have been having our butts whooped in MCC damage but have still won because we depleted their clone reserves.
NOTE: Just because you're healing people doesn't mean you can't still kill people. Once you get some money you can always replace the guns in the medic starter class with some guns of your own.
NOTE #2: It's worth saying if the person you're thinking about healing is surrounded by reds or you're getting shot as you get close to him... don't bother. You'll either die in the process or he'll die as soon as he's revived. There is still an element of strategy even if you heal people. You've got to pick and choose. Don't try to run across the map. Don't go into 'enemy territory' to do so.
Tip #3 - DON'T TAKE ON HEAVIES ALONE Never, never, NEVER try to take on a heavy alone. They'll kill you. You need at LEAST one other person with you but even then they can still wipe you out. The only time I would try to take on a heavy now is if they're already almost dead and I'm able to sneak up on them.
Tip #4 - TEAM UP / STAY TOGETHER If you can - join a squad with a couple of other people. Communicate via voice and help each other out. Stay near each other. Team work is KEY in Dust. The team that has better teamwork seems to always take the win.
If you can't find a squad just hang out with other blue dots on the map. If you're running around with 4 other blue dots you have less chance of dying and more chance of getting a kill and/or kill assist. Think about it. If you run into 2 red with your 4 blues.. they can't attack all four of you at once.
I created a channel in the chat called SquadHunt. It's not that popular right now but it's my goal to have it be a channel that is not affiliated with any corp where players can go to look for other players to squad up with. Join the channel and check it out when you're looking for squad mates.
Tip #5 - IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT WHO GETS THE KILL Nothing frustrates me more than players who complain about other players 'stealing their kills'. Maybe I'm just naive but as I said above.. team work is key in Dust. If you 'steal' somebody's kill - good! At least the red is dead. If you see a blue fighting a red alone - go after the red with him. If he gets mad because you got the kill... well - screw him. He could have just as easily died if you hadn't been there.
Tip #6 - SKILL POINTS Now I still don't know a LOT about skills but I have noticed that now that my Weaponry skill is at level 5 I do seem to be getting more kills. Each level gives you a little boost to damage per hit, I believe. I would suggest upping that skill ASAP. It could just be my aim getting better but who knows. |

Tip #7 - WEAPONS Everybody has their preferred weapon and such. Play around with a few different ones and find out which one works best for you. When I first started I was using the starter Sniper kit a lot because I was dying a lot and I felt I was hurting our team more than helping. When I sniped I died less and got more kills... but that didn't always make a difference because I wasn't there to help hack and such. There is always a give and take.
Shotguns do a lot of damage but they have to get closer to you than if they were to have an assault rifle.
Currently my preferred gun is the Beach Assault Rifle. It's a high damage / low rate of fire assault rifle. It shoots slower than regular assault rifles but each bullet does more damage. If my aim is on target I can take down enemies pretty fast.
Tip #8 - IT AIN'T OVER TIIL THE FAT LADY SINGS There have been quite a few games where I was thinking it was all over, we might as well give up, etc. And boy was I wrong. The other day I was playing an ambush game where we had 1 clone left and the other team had 10. We still came back and won. It was awesome. In skirmish mode you can always win even if you don't control any objectives if you kill reds more than they kill you. |

That last point is especially important. This past Friday a game of Skirmish I took part in ended with the allied MCC with literally one hit left. We managed to take all the objectives (seemingly at once) and we one the match. Never give up. Don't rage quit, either. It doesn't help the team and it only loses you the assets you purchased to go into battle with without the SP or ISK you could have potentially gained from the match.
I just wish the players who didn't do the things listed would actually come to the forums and read topics like this. I try to hold on until I bleed out, but usually the medics are preoccupied which is understandable. Other times respawning to keep the medic from dying is a necessity because the newer ones are like magnets to dead bodies, regardless of going down to sniper fire or hitting a wall of bullets from a HMG toting Heavy hiding around the corner. Sometimes, and I sort of hate to say it, other players in pubs are just plain stupid. Its not their fault, mind you. Its likely they just haven't learned the ropes of the game yet. |

Umm, if the map is filled with unkown blue dots, if i go down i try to hammer my respawn button as fast as i humanly can, blueberries with a nanite injector are very very lethal to your KDR.
-Heavy in your face, you just died ....heavy still firing at full RPM's accros your corpse ...."Chick" WAIT WAIT nNOOOOOOO, you have been revived. you died....omfg "Chick" WTF ...../get raped again.
I would rather change this to Tip #1 - If you are new do NOT carry a injector, leave it to the professionals.
I know its funny when you get to shoot 3 guys freshly rezzed and the guy doing the rezzing cannot figure out why they are all dead again when he turns his back towards them or he knows and doesnt care but just wants the rezz WP.
Eitherway, Don't rezz is the area isnt cleared yet. |

Sometimes people are just being jerks. I do this sometimes too, but it's almost always to other people in my corp. It's especially funny if there's a sniper. I got someone FIVE TIMES! You can use the nanite injector before someone is able to hit square, even if he is mashing it.
If I'm next to a blue dot I too hit square 90% of the time. It's not because I think they'll res me into a line of fire (I'm fine with it tbh), but it's that they don't res me at all. It was especially bad when open beta came around too. I'd estimate that about 75% of the time it said there was a nanite injector around, I wouldn't get helped unless it was a corp mate. If you're not getting picked up, you might as well just hit square and respawn ASAP so you can get back to battle. |

Maybe you're right. I should have specified (and will edit in a a bit to do so) that you might as well not bother healing if there are red dots all over the person who needs to be healed.
I didn't think about it because that's only happened to me a couple of time - dying instantly on res. |
