So after having played the closed Beta for a while and then taking a break I returned a few weeks ago after the game went to open beta. I decided on this go around I would skill up in to HAVGÇÖs. Unfortunately, (for me) it appears that AV has been ratcheted up a good bit. Since I remember a time when HAVGÇÖs were almost unbeatable I can understand why this was done. I learned that I needed to play much more cautiously and also to stay mobile and while I no longer can help control a match like days of old I can provide decent enough support to the team while keeping myself from getting popped more often than not. Unfortunately, as of late every time I play I seem to draw an orbital bombardment. Is there any way to avoid or survive once these are called down on your HAV? (Shield Tanker) At the cost of even my cheapest HAV (little over 400K) there seems to be no way to come out ahead and I see 2 to 3 of these Orbital strikes every match. Is going the HAV route a mistake at this time?
Sadly, all my skill points (1.3M) are placed into HAV so if I have to turn to infantry work IGÇÖm afraid I am going to be sorely deficient on that front. Any tips are appreciated.

First off, don't stop moving for long periods of time (takes awhile to accelerate if an orbital is called). Next, use multiple hardeners (either armor or shield depending on your class). This means you can have at least one running at a time and the other recharging. Also, I would recommend nitrous since it helps you get away from enemy fire quickly. Lastly, it helps to have squad mates to communicate with to act as spotters/defense. Oh and also still up either field mechanics (armor) or shield control (shields). Hope this helps. |

yah. Every update tanks got nerfed and AV got buffed. They're even coming out with a new AV that does a lot more damage than a forge gun, but has shorter range. You need to spend about 3mil SP to survive anything. Free orbitals are lame!
btw, i actually drive shield HAV. It's fun, but it's not a tank. Just a slightly better shielded and more armored LAV with a big gun, but gets ****** up by orbitals just the same. |

idk if it's a mistake yet. I put all of my SP into tanks too. Hopefully CCP will come out with some better mods and everything so it takes more than one AV to kill a tank, or at least make that AV's load out cost over 1mil.
I know a number of HAV drivers got basic skills, but haven't gone into stuff like a sagaris. They are waiting to see if this new AV is going to make it even more imba, and if any fixes will be done.
ATM orbital strikes are lame.
CCP did make a bunch of nice changes recently, so not all hope is lost! ^.^ |

not sure about tanks at the moment. Invested around 750k SP, but my tanks with around 6k damage are weak. To double that damage to 12k would need another 2.1 million SP. My current tank can be destroyed by non AV troops at medium range in seconds. Will a tank with 100% more damage be any better? not too sure. |

Is that 6k hit points? Are you armor or shield? 750k sp is a bit low. Have you just run on foot or behind a friendly tank and see how they work? |

I wouldn't say mistake.
HAV is still fun, but there is obvious AV problems.
OB's are a huge issue for me, I lose 95% of my tanks to them, since most people won't skill AV they will farm WP's.
I've had 5 OB's called on me in one match, within seconds of each other, the last one got me.
I'm hoping in the new build they will have re done AV vs Vehicle. But idk.
That will make or break the game for me. |

Well I appreciate all the input guys. At this point I might as well keep going down the path that I have set and hope that at some point things become a little more balanced. I don't mind losing a Tank to AV. Either I made a mistake or the other team outplayed me and earned it. Good job on their part. I too can remember the days when HAV was "god" mode and even as a fledgling tanker don't mind that things are a bit more balanced.
However, the mass of OB's that I usually face that make it almost impossible at this level to keep a HAV up an entire match seems a bit out of whack. Now that there seems to be some exploits potentially involved that help explains things to some extent.
On a positive note. Based on the tips in this and another thread I did survive a OB today. It only happened because I was at full shield and could put both resistance and repping boosters up quickly. Of course, I did not survive my attempted trip back to safety but at least I felt a bit better about it. |
