Consulting the map (Down on data pad) is a sure way to get yourself killed. It takes 3 seconds to load, and once it does you canGÇÖt see people sneaking up on you.
We need to be able to open a map that only takes up a little less than a quarter of our screen. (A corner, not centred.) While this is open you should still be able to move and shoot (defend yourself).
If I spawn at Echo and want to flank wide and take Delta I need to check the map so I donGÇÖt get lost. If I am tank hunting, I need to check the map to see where that tank went too. If I want to link up with my squad, and they are more than 100m away, it would be helpful to consult the map, not just to see where they are, but to see the safest way to get there.
I donGÇÖt want the map up all the time. That would be annoying. I want the Down Arrow to bring up the small map, and Down Arrow plus another button to bring up the full screen map. Or something like that. |

I was thinking a compass should be applied to the radar display, also I consult the map itself all the time in play.
the purpose of the compass is to facilitate giving orders to the rest of the squad.
this is pretty much how pointing out snipers usually go.
"he's up on that hill..."
"what hill"
"that hill behind B"
"there are 5 hills behind B"
"the big one"
"they're all big"
"f it....." |

You are in luck. There is a compass on the radar. If you look closely there is a little GÇ£NGÇ¥ on the perimeter of the Radar to indicate North. Maybe it would be better if W, E, and S were included too.
I personally would prefer for the Radar to be permanently locked in a North is Up configuration and rely on the arow on my dot to tell me which way I am facing. Maybe make an option to switch between the two modes. |

In PlanetSide 2, you can switch between different map sizes at the press of a button and still have control over your character. These maps are not like the overhead view of the field we have in Dust, but you can still see teammates, enemies and objectives, among other things. You can also choose between a fixed and rotating mini-map. We could use options like that in Dust. Here are some other features we could use:
- Semitransparent static map that covers most of the screen (not intended to replace the one we currently use)
- Same as above, but only slightly larger than the current mini-map
- Icons on the edges of the mini-map representing squadmates, objectives, installations, etc.
- Option to change the shape of the mini-map (you could choose between a square or a circle, for example)
