ReGnUM-DEI and I were conversing over IRC today, discussing our favorite air combat games, and I decided to make a thread about some of the points we were in agreement on.
First of all, is some means of accounting for G forces. Half of the issue that leads people to complain about jets being in games is the fact that these aircraft are implemented with all of their abilities, but none of the downsides that come with them. When you can fly around everywhere at max afterburner and still turn on a dime with no negative effects, they start to seem broken.
We use clone bodies in Dust that are designed to take a lot of punishment, so G tolerance should be pretty high, maybe around 12 Gs before your screen starts to fade out or some other means of making you start to lose control. With the pilot suits coming out, G tolerance could be a bonus that they have based on either Meta level of the suit or skill level, for instance.
My other point is based on an assumption, but I'm pretty sure I have the right idea here. The "Future Vision" trailer that Hilmar is so fond of showing at FanFest mentions the capsuleer cancelling the "air strike" and calling in an OB instead. Based on the evidence we have so far, I'm going to figure that means the ability for some form of drone to be sent down from orbit to do said air strikes, and I'm further assuming that means Fighter drones from carriers, given their semi-aerodynamic design.
So, linking to the ideas present in this thread: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=59216&find=unread
A. Allowing "Jets" to fly around the entire District to give them enough space to be effective and give them meaningful gameplay B. Have each District consist of multiple "battle zones" that each host 48 player fights that progress to new zones depending on which side is victorious in order to simulate a massive-scale battle while controlling latency.
I propose that Fighters have the ability to not only traverse an entire District, but to shoot down drones sent down by EVE players, thus providing a hard counter to this method of support that doesn't rely solely on switching to AV fits, since such strikes would be far more devastating that simply dealing with a tank. |

G-tolerance definitely seems like something that should be in, especially as it'd keep flying more sensible, and give pilots something to spec into, as well as provide a balancing point for vehicle agility.
Splitting up the battlefield into zones, like the systems in EVE, sounds like a brilliant way to add flow to the fight (even if a bit contrived), while keeping the battles contained to sizes the servers can handle without insane amounts of latency.
Fighters VS Drones sounds glorious, since they seem to fit the position for such a counter, and watching the fireworks show in the sky would be wonderful (also not getting blown up in a bombing run would be nice as well). |
