I don't get it. Was there something wrong with random squads?
I understand that lots of people were complaining that random squad leaders didn't know what they were doing and everything and often random squads would result in being with a bunch of noobs but this does nothing to fix that.
If I've missed a dev post or announcement explaining this, please someone link it because I can not for the life of me understand why this change was made.
Is this just an experiment to see if people will realise they're not in a squad or to see if people will actually try to squad up before or in-game? Seriously, if you're going to make this sort of change with any sort of intent, you've got to make a clear announcement in-game so all the non-forum goers see it and understand what's going on.
Before we had squad leaders not realising they were leader; now we just have whole teams without one single squad and none of the newberries even realising there are squads. |

Someone suggested that removing auto-squads would decrease some stress to the loading and improve textures, and call me crazy but since its implementation i'm seeing crispier graphics.
But they definitely need to bring auto-squads back. Maybe even add info about the squad like a small symbol indicating you're squad leader. |

I assumed it was so people playing solo would be more likely to communicate with others who aren't in squads.
Previously, the automatic squad matching meant people playing alone would be thrown into a squad with 3 other solo mercs.
Now, all solo mercenaries are piled into one giant team. People with mics are more likely to meet others with mics.
Isn't that just wonderfully romantic? Even more so than Twilight, I would dare to say. |

I like it. Means that you can scream at all the blueberrie's at once when your playing a bit of solo |

I saw someone else saying that it'll help people work together by using team chat but really this is the wrong fix for that problem.
People who didn't use voice before, still won't be using voice. And those using squad chat will still be using squad chat. If you wanted to stop people in random squads having squad chat on instead of team chat, make it default to team chat instead of squad. If you want more people using voice chat in general, make voice on by default. |

The "have team-chat be the default and let players make squads after meeting people to make them" also sounds like a good theory. |

This was the case the IRC crew argued for on the public squad removal. |

It makes absolutely no sense to fix the lack of team chatters by removing random squads. What makes sense is to make team chat default instead of squad chat. You don't fix comms by fiddling with something that is not comms.
I've also heard people saying how great it is that the whole team now uses their drop uplinks - erm, pretty sure you can use anyone's drop uplink irrelevant of the squad you're in. |

Drop uplinks can only be used be your own squad, not by players in your team. If you are not in a squad and use a drop up-link then all the other non-squad players can use that uplink.

mobil spawns are limited to squad, both based on what I've read as well as what I've experienced. I read somewhere that the version that comes with the merc pack is usable by the whole team, but haven't tested that myself so I can't say for sure.
The only reason I even reaslised they'd changed the squad mechanics is because I was confused why blue dots were spawning from my dropped CRUs XD |

I actually used this to my advantage last night and looked for formed squads of 1 or 2, and then joined them... surprise, guess who had mics and wasn't a run and gun newb? The squad I joined. Was then able to roll through about 8 or 10 games with them until we all had things to do.
Also, I noticed a bit more team work/mob running in ambush so maybe it is affecting play dynamics for some. |

Having solo players in a "No-Squad Squad" (LOL) is a great improvement.
I tested it by going solo and actually found other mic users! Reminded me about that romantic last spring/summer when total strangers started co-oping thru voice on regular basis...
Also, Drop Uplinks work nicely for these no-squadders. That might help to lessen those annoying redline matches to some degree, which is very good. |

We're just trying to increase the social awareness of the game, the next fix we're fighting for is the default voice on (as in you can hear other people talk)
Also 12-16 squads on a team was way worse than 1 squad + 12 team.
Also squads you join are likely going to be pre-organized and already willing to work together.
Overall its a recruiting and social forming tool. Not a divider.
The pros so far are outweighing the cons. |

I actually like it. Just drop an uplink and watch the WP roll in while I'm busy stabbing people. Surprisingly the uplink runs out in less than a minute if your team sucks that badly. |

Also: each squad had it's on voice channel, regardless if the people in them had a mic or were solo. Removing squads helps take some stress off the servers. |
