Was at a shooting range the other day and I began noting the sound of the rounds flying across the distance, that distinct sound that's almost like the sound you hear right before thunder.
The acoustics of a bullet "echo" are rather interesting, the sound you hear isn't from the bullet (which is just a sharp metallic ringing when it's flying through the air) it's the sound of the actual gases in the casing being ignited. The "gunfire" so to speak, the initial explosion inside the barrel.
Now, what's interesting is that those sounds are prevalent. Unfortunately, Dust 514 lacks them and in situations where there should be a lot of acoustics bouncing off of surfaces (such as firing a weapon at Objective A in Manus Peak) a lot of the immersion disappears as you only hear the initial sound of the gun being fired.

If you listen beyond the initial gun shots you can hear the echo of the gunfire ringing across the open area where the battle is taking place. I'll note a few things we're hearing:
A.) The gunfire, obviously. B.) The sounds of the rounds being fired from a distance, the "fireworks" sort of sound. C.) The echo of the gunfire returning to the source when bouncing off of a distant surface. D.) The sound of the casings hitting the ground nearby.
There's a lot going on and it makes the battle -feel- a lot more serious than it really is.
Another thing you miss is the sound of bullets missing and ricochets. I'll leave it to the infamous quote from Black Hawk Down to take care of that:
"Grimes: Why aren't you shooting? Waddell: We're not being shot at yet. Grimes: How can you tell? Waddell: A hiss means it's close. A snap means... [a bullet whizzes close by] Waddell: Now they're shooting at us! [they begin returning fire] "
Less importantly is Ambient Battle Sounds, the sounds of battles occurring in the distance. These are more for large scale battles but when done correctly it can give a very foreboding experience to the combatants; knowing that there's a battle at least somewhere nearby. Considering that planets are made into districts, it's not so far out of the realm of disbelief that you wouldn't be hearing some type of battle going on already, even at the start of the match.
We already hear MCCs firing at one another but it's often very quiet and you never really notice it unless you're spawning in the MCC itself.

I dunno. It's just a thought - something to give the firefights a bit more immersion than what's currently in the game at the moment. |
