It's no cowboy bebop soundtrack though

This was its intro song. SERIOUS!?!?! I always ignored .hack, never watched it. I've recently started watching an anime Called "Sword Art Online" and it has the exact same plot as you described. Except the main character is a freaking nerd that defies all rules of how the world works and gets laid by hot girls that fall in love with him after 1 day.

Well the main victim ('he isn't the main character but the story revolves around him) is considered an anti-social and the game somehow answered a solution to that with this bugged companion. The Game Masters couldn't even debug the character free. Other than the bug there is nothing special about the character's avatar. However if you really want a really fubared anime to watch (as in mind @#$% variety and not the WTF japan or over pg stuff) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-PkAQcuZOw Story of a school girl that receives a text message from a classmate that committed suicide a week before reading "I am still here, my body just went away." This leads the girl into questioning boundaries of what is real. If you done psychology this anime would be a treat to you.
