I went in someone elses tank, the blaster overheated, and I found a small railgun on top. It was pretty much useless against close infantry, with a slow rate of fire. What is their intended use? Any tips for small rail guns? |

To suck.

Don't use them.
They are almost impossible to aim, have almost no splash damage, and have almost no damage against anything other than infantry (a patch or so ago I think it was 10-15%).
They also use more CPU than a missile turret and more PG than a blaster, so they suck for fitting too. He had a militia tank, or he was experimenting with them, or doing some weird fitting, or could he could quite possibly be bad.
edit: It'd make sense if the small raiguns were good anti vehicle/installation, but because of their reduced damage, slow speed, and difficulty to aim they are not good for anything.
As a general rule, small turrets on HAVs are just not good. A day one militia merc with an AR is more effective on the ground than he is in a proto small turret. |

They only have 2 uses right now- scaring off people, and occasionally killing heavies. |

They are very good railguns take practice once you get deadly aim with them you will know there power and yes the slower more damage rail guns over heat faster that is why the less damage faster rail guns are for infantry. You can lay out more shots in less time but still hit hard with them only use high damage turrets (the slow ones) if you want to take out enemy installations or vehicles. |

I am sure most of these comments are from players who havent actually used small turrets that much so find them pointless but do a rail gunner he knows there true power accurasy is the most important thing in the game. The faster infantry turrets which dont overheat as fast shoot every 1.1 seconds that is not slow considering they can hit 356 a hit the ones im using atleast do. |

Actually I take that back. I usually play skirmish, but I did a couple of ambush games with some other people. I noticed that, like always, blue dots got into my tank. Since there were so many things to shoot next to my tank, they were able to get a few kills and assists.
The biggest benefit to the small turrets in ambush is that they usually have two terribly bad blue dots sitting in them. You might think that this is a bad thing, but you're taking them off of the field and into a safe location where they won't help the other side clone you.
To show my gratitude towards the blue dots for not dieing, I gave them nice turrets and I even gave them a few damage mods.
I still hate blue dots in skirmish, but I'm fine if they sit in my tank in ambush. |

I put a small railgun in my Methana, snuck right behind 0 Try Harder, and it did absolutely nothing. Don't use them until they get a buff which they definitely need. |

They're terrible AV- I found out last build with the prototype small rail I had then that it still takes about 10 shots to destroy a STARTER FIT LAV |

In truth, they're installed to make those annoying bluedots; that like to fire at the ground, buildings, and everything else that is not red, from camping in your tank, only to continually give your position away. |
