I like to write, and it was the fiction behind EVE that brought me to the game all those years ago, before it released. I've always wondered why there's never been a movie. There's certainly a lot of material to work with.
I've read a lot of the Chronicles, and there's one that I rank as the best EVE story ever told. It's called Khumaak and you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you never experienced its emotional power. I don't know who wrote it, but they're a master of their craft, and if you know their name please do tell me.
Khumaak stands out to me above all other fiction namely because it's not primarily about the technology or terminology, the power politics or the pew-pew, it's about people with their hopes, dreams, deficiencies of character and of expectation. It connects with you on a level that only the best stories can. I wanted to write something like that. And though only you can be the judge of whether I've succeeded in creating something good, for me personally it was a worthwhile endeavour.
It's only the first act of what would be a full screenplay, and I've had to steal time away from the game to get it done, but if it connects with readers it will have been a price worth paying. The race I chose to focus on for this story were the Caldari and their society. Though an alien corporatist culture it is still accessible, you can still understand why its people loyally commit to such a system, as might be more difficult for the Amarr. The Gallente, on the other hand, are most similar to ourselves and in that way a little boring, while the Minmatar have never really captured my imagination. There's actually an machinima EVE movie called "Clear Skies". Or, more accurately, there is an EVE movie trilogy called "Clear Skies". It's pretty good, but it was made long before DUST, so there's no mention of immortal mercs. |
