my buddy was reading up on the Thales sniper rifle.
And it mentions that ammo type can be changed by a change in the clip.
So does this mean there is going to be different ammo types (Such as armor piercing rounds , incendiary , Etc)

Hyrbid Weapons typically use various ammo charges.
These are usually standard issues Iron Cores with an energy cell matrix able to function in a multitude of weapons.
More exotic forms allow for more various effects of range and damage.
The most deadliest is of course antimatter rounds which uses advanced magnetic containment to keep the fissable materials within a metal shell casing. However because it needs it own magnetic field to keep all other normal matter away from the material it has by far the shortest range because of the collapse of the bubble.
Most rounds are contact penetrator warheads though, similar to the minmatar bullets. When used in kinetic weaponry such as the guass rifle or railgun the energy cell is typically depleted or drained a bit to power the weapon propelling it. In blaster/plasma weaponry such as the plasma rifle the round is turned into the fissiable material using the powercell, slagged, bottled up, and then sent down range (long range plasma weapons), or the bubble is popped in the direction of the target (blasters/shotgun) thus dumping the entire contents of the plasma and imbuing that target with the level of energy of the plasma state of the round. Typically these are massive radiation hazards to operators, and for the longest time where low power weapons because of safety concerns.
Because hybrid rounds contain their own power, this lowers the electrical needs of most hybrid weapons significantly requiring less of a mobile reactor or extensive capacitor in keeping it operational. Luckily all dust 514 dropsuits are equipped with a microfusion reactor courtesy design of the Amarrian empire.
As for those of you curios about minmatar technology being effective against the new ceramics, polymer and alloy armors and shielding systems. You have to consider the ammo they're shooting such as nuclear, phased plasma. Essentially all of their rounds are miniature chemical reactive warheads using energy potential material to propel rounds and the bullets themselves detonate on impact or uses some other extraordinarily nasty tricks in defeating defenses such as Trianium cores which explode rather violently with atmospheric gases when exposed. A shot to an unarmored foot is sufficient to kill most humans.
For all intents and purposes of the technology trials they are more concerned with getting weapons kinked out and of course keeping on par with the technology race. Ammunition is a rather expensive and time consume research development. It would do little good if one race managed to make their front line rifle more efficient than letting their own army weapons fall behind. Ammo can come later core systems have to be kept on par. |
