I post these in the general section because no one reads them in feedback and suggestions and if I get a Dev or GM to move it, It means I know they read it, which gives us that slim chance of it actually coming to Dust. Now that we got that out of the way.
How would you guys feel about specialized rounds or ammo being added to the game? I think it would add a deeper level of gun game to Dust with more weapon combinations, customization's and loadouts to choose from.
For example, Assault rifles could have bullets that give a 2% damage increase. Or sniper rifles could have rounds that are cloak tipped, that reduces the visibilty of the bullets smoke line(I don't know what its called) but it comes with a range decrease.
I could come up with at least 20 of these for every type of weapon in the game. Of course we don't want the specialized rounds taking precedent over skill books, so they would all be very minimal increases or have some sort of trade off for special rounds like the sniper example above. Add another slot above the weapon slot labeled "Rounds" or "bullets" or whatever you'd like and have them cost a certain amount of PG and CPU to be added to your fit.
Last but not least, these rounds would be bought just like any other item, not by bullet amount. Meaning, If I bought 100 of Shotgun 3% range Increase rounds, My weapon will only shoot these specialized rounds and will be replenished from any supply depot or nanohive, the amount of special rounds for my fitting will only decrease by 1 for every death I receive. Reverting back to normal bullets as soon as your fit runs out of these Bullet mods.

Sounds pretty sick, I'd like to add some 5% increase ROF magzines to my breach assault rifle, I lose so many gun fights because while the damage is high, the low ROF makes it really useless against GEK's and even milita AR's unless you're aiming for the head.
I'll give you a +1, hope this happens, for real. |

What's the trade-off though?

Trade off would be increased armor damage and decreased shield damage. Same way it works in EVE. |

And the way it already works in Dust. The Mass Driver does less damage to shields, but tears through armor. |

CCP has already stated there will be various damage types like they have in Eve (explosiv, kinetic, EM, thermal) - not that this is exactly what you had in mind but it is kind of related.

I'll throw out some ideas for how ammo types could work in Dust 514 based on how damage types work in EVE Online:
Electromagnetic: Damage inflicted through electromagnetic radiation. Lasers inflict this, as well as some missiles and projectiles. Shields are most vulnerable to it, armor is least vulnerable to it. EM rounds in Dust could work by inflicting electric shock.
Thermal: Damage inflicted through extreme heat. Lasers can inflict this type of damage, as well as certain missiles and projectiles. All hybrid weapons inflict this kind of damage by default. Shields and armor take equal damage from it. Thermal rounds in Dust could be hybrid rounds (in weapons that don't use them by default) or incendiary rounds.
Kinetic: Damage inflicted through kinetic force. All hybrid weapons inflict this kind of damage, as well as some projectiles and missiles. Shields have the second highest resistance to Kinetic damage, while shields have the second lowest resistance. Kinetic damage in Dust would probably be inflicted by most weapons, but Kinetic rounds could be Armor-Piercing rounds.
Explosive: Damage inflicted through explosions. Some missiles and projectiles inflict this kind of damage. Shields are most resistant to explosives, while armor is least resistant. Explosive rounds in Dust could be... Well, Explosive rounds. |

I don't think you understand the concept behind most of these weapons.
ARs shoot Plasma, the 5th state of matter if you include Einstein's state of matter at absolute Zero.
Pretty sure you can't have cloaking plasma, nor explosive plasma unless you have gas dissolved in it, but that would probably just kill the user. |

While the idea is merited and plausible the op is going about it the wrong way.
Most ammo in eve is mostly changing damage outputs, range, and damage types.
IE EMP minmatar rounds do emp damage which strips shields quickly but not armor like the typical minmatar explosive round does.
As for possibilities of various types of ammo feasible by dust 514. as Bojo pointed out its possible while some repetitive. |

Really? We're going to go there? Anything is possible in a video game, especially one set thousands of years into the future. |

ARs shoot charges of plasma surrounding an atomized core of *metaltype* (this is where the damage flavor comes from) You're still shooting bullets, they're just so hot they dissolve the atmosphere around them.
The poor Minmatars cannot heat their bullets, but still stuff them with interesting exotic matter. |

We could add wizards and warlocks if you'd like.
And to the other guy, good point but you can't make the plasma explosive which is the main point of the weapon. The bullets would also be moving at such a high velocity and have so much heat that I'm sure they'd explode just from leaving the weapon. |
