The idea i've been playing with is a feature or module that will convert a mobile tank to a stationary, field-artillery mode, similar to Siege Tanks in Starcraft, or Dreads in siege in EVE online.
1 - Tanks would have a minimum range... say, 100 meters. So, you couldn't be targeted if you got close. 2 - Shield and armor regen/rep would be stopped while in Siege, as they are redirecting power to the gun 3 - Would take x-time to convert from mobile to immobile mode 4 - Friendly fire would be on, so you better be damn sure not to be dropping ordinance on your teammates. 5 - Tanks would have no on-board targeting system.... they can dumb-fire, but would have no way to target 6 - To get around point #5, a spotter would be required to paint targets. Tank commanders would designate a player as their spotter, and that spotter would use a module to pain a target... a target that would show up on the tank's screen (with proper elevation and direction). 7 - Tank precision and rate of fire could be skill based, as can the accuracy of the target info coming from the spotter.
Much like other artillery, if there is an object in the flight path of the shell, or if the target is under something (like a table-top), the ordnance will not reach the target.
So.... just an idea that could give some decent field support, give an extra role to snipers, provide a solution to counter red-line sniping, and have sufficient counters (hard to hit moving targets like LAVs, and you're screwed if someone gets inside your minimum targeting range).
Plus, would require at least 2 people to manage (driver and spotter), and as the tank is stationary, with reppers and boosters/rechargers offline... the tank is weak to counter-fire.
So... just a brainstorming session at the moment... what do you think? |

How about instead of using the main weapon of the tank as a gun which shoots in a mostly straight line trajectory, it turns into a weapon more like a mortar. In quite a few of the maps there are many building that would block almost all shots directed toward a null cannon. A mortar however would be able to reach more targets surrounded by buildings. Some of the same limitations could be used as well such as the minimum range, no sheild/armor rep, use of a spotter...etc. |

Tanks are too mainstream for siege mode
Btw you're missing a lot of the points for siege mode |

Yes, this is along the lines of what I intended... a parabolic arc for the shell... and the minimum range limit is because the gun turret won't point vertical (or close to it).
If tanks don't get used for this... perhaps we can have field artillery as one of the modules/installations we can "order up" and have dropped from space... all for a price, after all. |
