No this is not another post that says we need more/different game modes in Dust. Everyone knows that, and we also know that we have to wait until fanfest to get them (hopefully). This is a suggestion to the community that perhaps the game, and the EVE universe as a whole, would be better served if we stopped thinking about arcade FPS game modes (a'la MAG, Battle Field, etc.), and started thinking a little more outside the box. Yes MAG, and the Battle Field series, has a lot to offer (and possibly emulate), but I think we'd be better served if we thought more along the lines of Crysis, and the Far Cry series.
Now I know that's not really "out of the box", seeing as how they're still FPS games, but the fact they operate as mission/objective driven, large, open world SANDBOX games does give us a grander starting point.
The issue of redline fighting could be completely eliminated
Battlefield Commanders could choose their infiltration points, giving strategy and tactics a larger role in the game. (As it stands now, we're all pretty polite when it comes to fighting. "You start over there, and we'll start over here, and we'll meet somewhere in the middle and fight. Oh, and we promise not to bring more people than you, because that would be unfair." I know this is supposed to change at some point, but it always stikes me as rather ironic.)
PVE and PVP would operate at the same time, and in the same space, as it does currently in the EVE universe. And if you were exploring/salvaging, etc., in an area where one Corp decided to invade another, you might just be SOL.
Lastly it would completely eliminate the need for CCP to constantly come up with new "games" for us to play, as creative players and Corps would find there own ways getting what they want. Like playing Ambush? How about actually laying ambush for other players to fall into, and then salvaging their stuff. Like playing Skirmish? How about secretly infiltrating an enemy Corp's base/factory/space port and taking it over (in real time) with out them knowing about it. Or having a scouting party slip behind enemy lines to plant Drop Uplinks in strategic places, then sitting back and watching your Corp mates lay waste to your unsuspecting foe.
And these are just a few of the ideas that I can think of off the top of my head. You want to steal something (Aquisition)? Go ahead, if they weren't guarding it, they must not have wanted it. But be aware that you might be facing overwhelming odds and your small squad of 6 men might be running for their lives from the 30 Assault types and 3 tanks that just happened to be there.
Now I'm not saying that we should completely do away with the current (and possibly future) game modes. I believe these have a place in the Dust Universe as training grounds used to familiarize new players with the game, and it's fighting mechincs. It can also be used for Corps to brush up on there strategies, and small unit tactics, in a more controlled environment before launching major attacks.
This isn't Call of Duty. This isn't Battle Field. This isn't MAG. This isn't like anything else the gaming world has ever seen before.
This is Dust 514, and it should stand apart. |
