So when I started Dust I picked Gallente because they sounded cool and shooting the Amar just sounded fun but is this going to matter at all in the future? As a merc am I just going to shoot who Im told and not care whos side Im on? Are there player run corps that care more about one faction or the other? Or do we all sort of pick our character then just hang out with who we want and shoot whoever bothers us that day? Or on the other hand could I join some giant federation and try to kill some crazy empire? Having not played EVE I find all of this a bit overwhelming. I want to get to met people and play in some sort of corp someday but dont know if I have already ruined my chances with half of them without knowing it. Any info or advice is welcome. |

I'm unsure of whether or not your Race in the game has any impact on your character/drop-suits as well. As I'm also new. I kinda doubt it somewhat though, as it probably has little impact if any. It's a good question. In either case I picked the Gallente as well. I like the short text it had on the back-story as it seemed like the best choice. |

Right now the only impact your chooses race has is a different Merc quarter. Due to the mercenary nature of this game it is very unlikely that there is much more impact of your choosen race. |

It has been said by Devs that it does not. Even in faction wars, you can fight for another faction, as you are indeed a mercenary. |

Yeah, it just affects your MQ and how cool you are.
Since you picked Gallente, you're all set. Of course, if you are Intaki, that's the cream of the crop, but any Gallente is good. 
However, in the future, when racial dropsuits come into use, your starting skill set might reflect your starting race's suits.
I doubt that it would go deeper than that, and you could always train into the other racial suits if you want them. |

There's one more difference that people tend to forget about: the free militia LAV.
You either get the Onikuma (more shield, missiles) or the Baloch (armor, blaster turret).
Currently missiles are useless and while you can equip another turret it means your LAV is nolonger free. Also, there is no BPO for militia vehicle shield extenders and the Onikuma doesn't have enough PG to equip a militia armor plate (for which there are BPOs), so you can't really improve the survivability of it with a BPO-fitting.
Not a huge deal however since the militia LAVs aren't very good whatever you do ;).
EDIT: Since I'm Caldari (and stuck with the Onikuma) I've hardly used the Baloch at all. Will a railgun turret instapop it if it's plated? If not I guess maybe it matters a *bit*. |

It affects more than quarters- also affects what starter fit LAV you have. |
