Let's say my character was from Amarr empire, they believe that slavery is but one step on a spiritual path toward fully embracing faith. Me on the other hand does not, in fact I believe in freedom and democracy. Thus, I want to fight for Gallente Federation and only way to do that is to do a mercenary work. However, right now this game does not allow that to happen. Mercenaries are automatically deployed to the battle for the highest bidder without knowing the cause. I would love to fight for the Factions that I believe is the best and worth being loyal to so that I don't become just one of the mindless mercenary who just fight for money, not for loyalty or a just cause. I am aware that this game is just in beta, but I really hope that CCP would allow for me to fight for the Factions of my choice when it comes to the final release. |

There is a faction warfare system where player-run corporations can accept contracts from the 4 empires. I'm not sure if you can actually pick which side though, though I hope in the future you will be able to pick sides for all battle contracts (when not from matchmaking). |

My guess is that as the game core mechanics get nailed down more tightly, we will start to see something along the lines of "missions" ("quests" in WOW lingo) given by "Agents" (NPC mission givers) that not only pay you money but affect your "Standing" with the Agent, his/her Corporation, and eventually, his/her Faction.

That is how it works in EVE, so I suspect that some form of Standings and associated rewards will eventually come into the game as the big stuff (graphics, lag, hit detection, etc.) gets tightened up. Right now they seem to be really focusing on that stuff because it's critical to the game's short-term success. |

In EvE, many ethnic Gallente fought for the Caldari side. I'm sure dust will let you fight for anybody you want, once we can pick battles. |
