Does what is says on the tin.
I think this is definately more important in larger maps. Not so much now.
But once an area is secure, depending on how large maps work; automated sentry guns would go a long way to help defend a location.
Im not talking about something the rips that ass out of other players, but definately punishes careless or unteamworky players.
Im thinking Aliens special edition "they barely kick ass but they come in handy".
Challenges/Limitations:
One per equipment slot Maximum amount deployed (2-3? per player) About the same damage as a AR Terrible against vehicles Low Armour HP Medium Shield HP (about the same as militia Assault) Shorter range than an AR (who wants to be snipeed by a sentry gun) Uses scan profile to track targets (?)
Alternatives:
Some crazy varient ideas for sentry guns:
Rocket sentry. (Only tracks vehicles) EMP sentry (Fires a blast that disables shields) Stasis Webifier/Flux Sentry (Slows everything in a radius) Nanite Swarm Sentry (Releases a cloud of nanites that degrades stamina/Armour/Shields, in its active radius) Intelligence/Target Painter Sentry (Target paints any target, or even just notifys the owning player that it has identified an enemy at its location - useful if your far away).

I am vehemently opposed to anything that can kill players which is automated. I hate those kinds of things being in FPS games. A deployable gun of some sort that you can man yourself, which has a limited fire angle, but is like a stationary HMG? Sure. Sounds fine. Deployable weaponry for covering areas is cool. But I do not want to see AI doing the fighting for players. |

Thanks for the reply
I know what you saying, but loads of FPS games have or have used sentry guns.
No sentry guns is fine is games with very small maps deathmath style CoD, Unreal, halo, Gears.
But in larger games with huge battlefield maps (Planetside) were the limited amount of players can't stand and watch objective all the time, they do help with defence; usually poorly.
Oh and sentry guns are already sort of in the game. Large installations will shoot at you in certain circumstances.
Im talking about a small weak uncontrolable variant.

Hm, as I see it, having sentry guns can go two ways:
1) They are no match against human players. Thus, the defense value of them is negligible. Additionally, they use up resources and equipment slots you could use for useful things.
2) They dominate the area they guard. Thus, they not only become mandatory equipment, they also infuse the deployer with free WP/SP/ISK.
In both cases, I'd rather omit the idea alltogether, especially as there are gun turrets all over the maps already anyway.
Sure, you could try to "balance" them, either via how good they actually perform, or how much they would cost, but still, I don't see them add to gameplay. IMHO, if your forces are spread to thin to hold all the objectives, it's up to team tactics to at least hold enough to win. Also, the enemy has the exact same problems, as both teams tned to be generelly equally numbered. |

We already have them. They are Large Blaster Turrets. Well, there were unless HAVs are in the game.
Tough to put in a slot though. |

Sentry Guns don't sound like a HORRIBLE idea, but they would definitely need to be done CORRECTLY so they don't end up either useless or completely fackoff OP.
So I see it as a combination of the following:
- They have a targeting slice. That's correct, you can put them down facing one direction, and they can only turn in that direction. This would both reward the player who placed it in a good spot, and dissuade people from just dropping them willy-nilly. And for the other team, it's fairly simple to find out which direction the gun is pointing, and then go a different direction to avoid it.
- Flux grenades dismantle them, similar to how they work on Drop Uplinks or Nanohives. So a flux grenade is basically a localized EMP, and with the sentry gun being automated, it would almost certainly be susceptible to them. So people with flux-nades suddenly become that much more valuable to their team, tasked with clearing out the enemy's automated defenses in the process of taking an objective.
- They take time to set up. Currently, equipment the Logi has to set up is created almost instantly. I feel that, for something as potentially useful as a sentry gun, it should take time to install, and should only be doable on certain terrain types. No hills or walls or metal bars, the gun needs to be on a flat surface, and should take, at the very least, three seconds to put down. This would ensure that a logi can't just run into a heavily populated base, toss down a sentry gun, then rack up the kills while he runs off. It would need to be installed during a lull in the battle, while the enemy is driven off for the moment.
These are just some ways I think would make sentry guns more viable for the game. They make sense, lore-wise, and I'm all for fixed emplacements helping with base defense, so I'd be glad to see them put in. They would just need to be done right, so as to avoid abuse/uselessness. |

Just wait till I get drones... suddenly I will have up to five (if they use eves model) angry robots that do my bidding and eat the fafes of people I either tell them to or get to close to me .
Basically the amount of QQ drones are going to inspire is going to keep CCP's pool of tears full for a very long time. |

Ahem... GOTTA MOVE THAT GEAR UP!
Make a Sentry Drone a stable device, strong, unmoving, AI controlled, and most importantly, either a Gear slot(weaker) or a Light Weapon slot(stronger). Possibly a Logi Only thing. Make it an area denial weapon. People can easily kill it by being smart with corners and using arching or explosive weaponry like a Mass Driver, butthey won't be able to abuse corners if it has people backing it up. Ergo, kill the people supporting to kill the device, like a mini-tank of sorts.
