The shotgun is a monarch of two domains. It is the king of short-range, but it is also the queen of hard-to-use weaponry, taking its place right behind the Forge gun. The Breach variant has a very low ROF, giving you about one chance per second to hit the target; if you miss both of the shots in its chamber, you're pretty much dead. A person with worse aim could use the other shotgun variants, but their damage output is very unpredictable because of the wide spreads.
The shotgun is short-range specifically because of said pellet spread (and the fact that its pellets dissipate after something like 15 meters). The thing is, even inside those 15 meters, and really anything beyond five feet, the standard shotgun and the specialist shotgun are very unpredictable.
But when everything clicks, you can three-shot the best of 'em.
So they're guns that, in the right conditions, have potential to dish out a lot of damage.
They have the potential to. Truth is, from what I've seen, that potential is very rarely filled when against a player worth his place on the team. Compare it to the AR.
Often called OP, the AR is considered good for really but one reason: it is the opposite of the shotgun. It is reliable and easy to use. It doesn't matter if the target is five feet or fifty feet away. It doesn't matter if your cross hair is exactly on (or slightly in front of, if you're leading it) when you first pull the trigger. It doesn't matter if the first, second, or even the third bullet miss the target; as long as you hit them enough times within that 48-60 bullet mag, they're dead. You have a lot of redemption with it.
I'm not saying it's OP; the SMG, after all, is the same way minus the range and so is the HMG. In fact, the only gun that operates properly in short range that you can't spray and pray is the shotgun itself, making it the hardest weapon to use at the range it's meant to be king of.
So, as a user of the shotgun, I ask: Is it worth it to invest in the shotgun? Does it really do much in corp battles where people have each other's backs? |

If I were to throw together a dropship crew, I would put shotgunners among the people I want to jump out on the enemy's heads. |

Personaly i run a heavy suit with a militia shotty (i'm a tanker so i don't have many sp to spare on infantry) Get the positioning right and i don't fear anyone else on the battlefield (except for HMGs, they just point and kill you :P) Heavy has decent enough mobility on the smaller maps to get the jump on people, and the extra armour lets you take the time to place your shots. Many a time a shotty scout has come at me and hit me square once, only to get blown away with my first shot. |

Ever since Doom shotguns have been my favorite weapon second only to chainguns. They are totally worth it as they kill everything quick up close.
I know that shotguns are always weak in nearly every fps with the "lol no range" for balance reason, but with the right skills you can kill people from further away then you would think. I was hoping the breach shotguns were double barrel shotguns from space.
CCP PLEASE MAKE DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUNS, no scratch that. I want QUAD BARREL SHOTGUNS. Make it happen. |

Honestly, I don't think it's worth dumping a ton of points into Shotty.
I don't say this because it sucks. Playing Shotty Scout is wicked fun.
I say it because max Shotgun damage is never upgraded by skill, and you can field one of the best shotguns, HK4M, for 0 SP just by re-upping on AUR and a 30-day booster. And because when you place it directly on the temple of a distracted red dot, the Militia Shotty performs quite admirably.
Remember, all the pellets hit at 0m.
Shotgun is the one weapon in this game that starts off about as good it'll get. The rest is up to you. |
