I've recently started toying with Assault Dropsuits on an alt, and I've been enjoying it, so I've decided I want to invest in them on my main. The problem is, I've been using Logi suits since way back in the closed beta, and I don't really know how to fit an Assault suit., My current fitting is as follows:

 -Type 1 Assault Dropsuit
 -2x Militia Light Damage Modifier
 -Militia Shield Regulator
 -Militia Armor Repairer
 -Militia Locus Grenade
 -Assault Rifle
 -Militia Scrambler Pistol
 -Nanohive

Any suggestions for what I can do to improve the fitting? Other than replace the Militia gear with Standard or better gear, I mean.

Use a Shield Extender instead of 2 Damage Mods, otherwise you'll be a glass cannon.

I always carry Nanite Injector in my equipment slot, just so I'm ready if an ally goes down

Pro Tip: Many players have multiple fits ready to go for situational readiness.

As a newbro myself, I run mainly assault with a buffer fit using a Type II Assault suit:

 x2 Militia Shield Extender
x1 Basic Armor Plate (requires Armor Upgrades 1)
 x1 Militia Armor Repair
 * Remove one of these armor mods if using starter or Type I assault suit
 Weapon and Sidearm of choice

For grenades and equipment I have multiple fits ready to go. Basically duplicates of my main setup with variations:

 AV grenades, Nanite Injector
 AV grenades, Nanohive
 AV grenades, Drop Uplink
Maybe you prefer Locus grenades instead of AV? (AV are waaaay more fun!)

You can change suits at a supply depot mid-battle in order to swap to what you need. Or pick a different setup if you die and respawn.

Red dots bunched up around CRU? Get Mass Driver fit.
Want to go long range? Get Laser Rifle fit.
Red dots control all CRUs or there are no CRUs? Get drop Links.
Team has good CRU and Drop Link coverage? Get Nanohives.
Running with a group that has no logi? Get Nanite Injector.
 Tanks everywhere? Get anti-vehicle setup.

 Etc, etc.

In Skirmish, some people spawn first in Scout suit to rush objectives, and swap to assault for the grind.

The original fit I listed above is a buffer fit to absorb most damage. It is new player friendly. After you get the hang of it you will eventually have multiple fits. So much delicious customization available!

EDIT: Just re-read your OP. You have been playing a lot longer than me. Apologies for not catching that. Maybe a newbro will read my post and be inspired.

Standard assault fit for me is either decent dmg mods (enhanced + complex) or shield buffer. Plate + rep or dual shield regulator.

Assault rifle and sidearm (smg/pistol) + nades (av/flux/locus). Finally an injector or nanohive depending on who I'm running with. This is why you can have multiple fittings so do mix them up a bit.

Most militia mods for specialised things such as shield regulators and damage mods are really not worth the slot and you're better off with more ehp/reps.

 Tip from KUJO

Be ready for anything the game has to throw you, whether it be having a really good team on your side or even against you. If you have a good team, you can assume their will be squads with logi's in them, so cancel out the injector usage. See yourself going solo a lot? I would recommend getting nanocircuitry level 2 to carry the gauged nanohives (allows you to carry 3 and have 3 active.) If your running in a tight squad while having your team getting destroyed by the opposing team. Use uplinks, and at that spec into Drop Uplink Deployment again to level 2 to get the gauged uplinks, can carry 4 and have 2 active at any time (awesome way to turn games around quick and effectively, just be ready for the other team to start scoping areas out for your uplinks.) See yourself on more open map where vehicles may be giving you a hard time? Grenadier level 2 will take care of that with the packed AV grenades, walk around; see an LAV heading your way? Give them a little surprise ;)

Here is a few fitting I use for pub matches, can't give away all my fittings, might get trolled at that point
  (all in type-2 assault suits)

 Fit 1- My personal name: 2 v 1
 Complex Shield Extender
 Enhanced Shield Extender
 Gek Assault Rifle
 Locus Grenade
 Gauged Nanohive
 Enhanced Shield Regulator
 Basic Armor Repairer
 -no sidearm

 Fit 2- 2 v 1 AV
 Complex Shield Extender x 2
 "Exile" Assault Rifle
 Packed AV Grenade
 Gauged Nanohive
 Enhanced Shield Regulator
 Basic Armor Repairer
 -no sidearm

 Fit 3- 2 v 1 Uplink
 Complex Shield Extender
 Enhanced Shield Regulator
 "Exile" Assault Rifle
 Locus Grenade
 Gauged Uplinks
 Enhanced Shield Regulator
 Basic Armor Repairer
 -no sidearm

Taking it a step further, you have a tank on the field giving you problems at all, don't be afraid to use a forge gun (*hint hint*: shoot a tank directly in the rear of the tank, will do roughly 3x the damage of a normal forge shot)

And in case you don't know... AV grenades have a 30% buffer against armor, same with swarm launchers... as far as forges against shield and armor; personally can't tell a difference.

Hope this helps you out a little bit, i wish I could give more details without risking my own fits for corp battles in the process, if you have more questions feel free to hit me up in game or join our "DJIN" channel as well.
