Right now it's pretty difficult to get up a ladder in a hurry and requires quite a bit of finesse. I was thinking it would be far more natural to use the jump (X) button vs the (O) button, and if someone jumps into a ladder it's an obvious trigger to allow the player to climb the ladder. A subsequent jump (X) should allow the player to release the ladder just as easily.

I believe hitting O again does allow you to release a ladder. |

I rather like O, (Interact), for ladders, and I think it is helpful to have this for keyboards as well, as that makes it E rather than X, which would be Enter iirc.
X should be fine for releasing the ladder though, since technically you are jumping off. |

As the Heavy who chews for breakfast multiple red dots trying to use the ladder (and obviously fail to do it instantly) and stack in groups near it I am against ruining my fun. That's it. |

And it should stay like that. When there is something fun and challenging in a game why do players always ask for the devs to take it away? Running up to ladders, jumping onto them and then climbing up is really fun.
You couldn't do this using your suggested change.
Climbing ladders in a hurry takes skill and should always take skill.
And I am only half kidding. |

Have you ever climbed a ladder? anyone in any kind of shape can quickly run up a ladder and even jump onto one especially if it's anchored ot the side of a building. And we are talkign about super soldiers....
IN the least, it's clumsy as a mechanic- which is the problem. My suggestion is towards immersion and ease of control of your avatar. Climbing a ladder as it is now is a jarring and frustrating process. Thus, IMHO, it should be changed. |

What I am saying is that it is completely possible to run down a hillside, jump 15 feet, land on a ladder halfway up, and climb up the ladder with the control layout exactly as it already is. I have games where all I do is run around the map and jump on ladders and climb up them as fast as I can. Sometimes I feel like I am better at climbing ladders in this game than shooting. That when you actually put some practice into jumping onto ladders and climbing them it isn't a clumsy mechanic. It is a fun and challenging mechanic. And you want to take my fun away.
Look, what you are asking for is kind of like me saying that the shooting is a clumsy mechanic because even though my character is this badass super soldier I am missing more than half my shots all the time. For me to feel more immersed in my character and to actually get some willful suspension of disbelief going I need to make at least 80 percent of my attempted head shots. I want to see a lot more ease of control with my avatar as far as shooting goes. As is shooting is a jarring and frustrating process. I am always getting killed before I get the chance to kill another player. This should be changed.
And I am still only half kidding.
But it would be a good improvement if the climb speed was different depending on the suit type. Scouts should be able to climb ladders much faster than they do now. Heavies should only be able to climb ladders if a logi is helping to push them up the rungs. |

Not really. I never said anything about leaping 15 feet into the air. You made that up to bolster your misunderstanding of what I am saying further, though. And I am not complaining about the shooting mechanic. But in fact, I do have a similar complaint.. in that I want to use the trigger button instead of the bumper button as a trigger. It's contagious idiocy in the game dev world to insist on the bumper being the trigger. But CCP is far more of a developer than DICE ever could be, and thus they are already planning to allow a player to remap a controller to their liking.
Basically, ladder, trigger button, etc.. a player shouldn't have to fight to get up a ladder. It removes you from the game and laser beam focuses a player on how clunky and jarring the controls are. Same goes for placing objectives as a squad leader. You shouldn't be wrestling with the controller to use game mechanics. The ladder O button is a problem for a lot of people, and you said it yourself.. once you put a lot of practice into it... IMO, you shouldn't have to practice getting up a ladder no more than your should practice walking. it's simple activity and it should be simply accomplished. |
