Considering going straight on the HAV path. As of now I have 400k unspent SP, which I do not expect to get me very far but it's a start.
My problem is that I have no idea which HAV to aim for. I'm mostly just interested in how competitive the Gallente HAVs are in comparison to the Caldari ones. |

Calamari = anti tank
Gallente = anti infantry
Both are competitive in their respective fields. They can cross over and perform each role fairly well, imo Gallente tank can go into AV easier than Calamari can AI, but a calamari tank should always beat a gallente.
Hope that helps ^_^ |

Both can fit railgun turrets easily, but Gallente (my choice)- armor, which means forge guns will be less dangerous, while swarms and AV nades are more dangerous, while flux grenades are no threat- armor modules additionally tend to add more total HP than shields. Also blaster turrets, which are very good at killing things significantly smaller than you. However, an armor repair unit is a must, and the best modules (IMO) are low slots, which will also be where all your armor mods are going. You'll also have a slower top speed, which can be countered with highslot boost modules. Gallente HAVs are harder targets for serious AVers, but are in danger of the legions of panicking scrubs with starter fit swarms.
Caldari- Shields, meaning forges and flux grenades are more dangerous, while swarms and AV grenades are less dangerous. Missile turrets get a bad rap, but they're decent at covering a wide area with fire (learn to spread your missiles and be a nightmare to dropship pilots). Caldari HAVs also have the free lowslots to fit things such as torque mods, passive turret mods, and PG/CPU mods. Caldari HAVs seem to be the easiest target for serious AVers |

My personal set up is a armour tanked marauger. Rail gun main and two blaster secondaries, most of my time is spend managing my two reps (1 large and one small) and getting my gunners into position to mow down infantry. The rail gun is normaly only used to get kill asists (kill assists from your gunners gives you more SP than a kill) Or to take down an enemy vehicle. I've yet to meet a tank that can 1v1 me, most blaster fits can't even break my rep tank.
The most important thing to do is realise where enemy AV fire is coming from and move. Chances are they won't be able to follow you for long since they don't stand a chance if they run itno your infantry, and you can then approach the battle from a different angle. Beware moving next to enemy spawn points as they tend to spit out AV militia fits faster than you can kill them.
And finaly, if your going to fit a rail gun don't underestimate the value of putting non-militia small guns on. It bumps the price of your tank up by a bit, but with a pair of good gunners your safer from AV and can rack up a lot of SP from the 35 point bonus every time they kill someone. |

If you're going rail, you might as well go shield tank. There's CPU and PG fittings for both. Gallente is geared for PG (aka blaster, it even gives additional damage to it). Missiles are terribad. A railgun can one shot a dropship, no need for anti-air spam.
Small turrets are trash. If I could not fit them I would. Infantry are much more effective OUTSIDE of your tank, even if you have proto small turrets.

Also, remember that going down the caldari path means you're more or less forced to put SP in large missiles- to use the standard caldari one. |
