I'm not what you would class as a gamer, not these days... long gone are the hours spent on UT2004 but I am getting interested in Dust.
My real problem is that I'm not particularly good at this type of game, as my shocking kill : death ratio on my main character, will testify so I'm after a few tips on how to make it more enjoyable really. I played for an hour or so last night and was continually being picked off by snipers, who I couldn't see, spawning right in front of someone who proceeds to kill me before I can even move or just being unlucky enough to get my opponent down to almost dead before being killed myself. I even tried being a logi but spent my time just trying to get to people and being mowed down before I was able to help.
Anyway, I've had a look through this forum and picked up a few things; stay out of the open, avoid running blindly at a heavy, the usual sort of thing, but in order to not feel like I'm bringing the team down, is there anything else that would just tip the edge in my favour a bit and make the game something more than a crouching and running simulator?! I imagine I speak for quite a few people really; the masses aren't going to be hot shots, just regular people who like to have fun.
tl:dr - I'm not very good, my skills are bad and I should feel bad. Should I quit or can you help.... or why not Zoidberg?! |

1) Focused skilling. Don't spread skillpoints out too much, get your skills up in a few select skills. Generally speaking, pick one of these areas to focus on: Shields, armour or weapon damage/operations. For shields, the extenders are the thing to look for. For armour, the armour repair module is very important, as well as the plates. For weapons, the faster you can kill, the less chance you die yourself.
2) If you're a Logibro, shoot stuff! Nothing is more annoying than getting rezzed only to get killed the next second because the Logi didn't check his surroundings. Bad for me, bad for the logi and definitely bad for the team.
3) Move around, don't stand still! Also important for when the screen goes black just before you spawn.
4) Situational awareness. Glance at the minimap as often as you can, check right and left when you go somewhere... This takes time to learn, so don't stress it just yet. |

Well to get back into FPS games, after Counter-Strike (10-15 years ago) it has taken me a year to get back to what i feel is like 30% of what i could do back then. Gone are the precise Headshots, gone are the super awareness and welcome carpal tunnel syndrome on my wrists....
I played APB R & War Z, the last one is great to get back some ounce of awareness and APB is pretty good to get back some aiming skills.
1) I would say always keep your back towards a wall or at least look behind you from time to time, the spawns atm are brutal, also when you spawn check suroundings, i always spawn and then see red dots spawn, do they look around ? No they head straight towards a nearby fight...so they end up dead freshly spawned dead.
2) Grab a Shotgun on an alt and get back to training strafing at point blank, the shotgun is great to boost your awareness since you cant cross just any street without looking and you need to be in their face, it will also help when someone spawns next to you and it chews trough heavies like a kid in a candy store.
3) play assault or scout
4) Youll die allot at first but it will make you better in the least amount of time vs picking up long range weapons.
5) Also look on google for flash games that train reaction speed and aim. |

If this is your first FPS I'm sorry but I don't think this is the place to start unfortunately. When walking in to any area, make sure you have teammates near you, in front and behind. If you are walking to an area where you have no-idea whats in it, you will most likely die. Think of your teammates (sorry blue dots) as your 'testers' to test if theres a 'shark' in the water. Usually if there is one enemy in the location they will continue to go to that location for kills until one brightspark goes around and drops them all.
General tip: stick with the pack (you will see the blob, this is present in any FPS), not too far ahead, not too far behind (otherwise you won't be able to get any points). Try not to go with the pack if it is a lost cause, e.g. you are spawning on C, when the entire enemy team is there trying to get the hack off. If you know there is noone at another objective on the enemy team, try make your way there as fast as you can. Map awareness is really important in FPSers IMO. |
