Wall of text inbound.
Hey guys I posted this in the Feedback/Requests section of the fourms but it didn't get any attention, so I just wanted to post it here to get this idea noticed. This is a idea I got relating to the orbital bombardments.
Basicly there are two problems. The first is that in corp matches the only way you can find out if you have orbital support is if you are talking to an EVE player on comms. There is no other way to find out if you have orbital bombardments available apart from checking the off map support menu now and then, which can be difficult in the heat of battle. The second problem is that most players get confused when it comes to calling in a strike. On quite a few occasions I have had Dust players call in a precision strike by mistake, when my EVE player is sitting in orbit.
Because of this I thought the user interface could be improved a bit to help players know when orbital support is available, and the difference between an orbital bombardment and a Warbarge strike.
The first thing I am going to propose is a pop up that alerts players when a ship has connected to the district they are fighting for in a corp battle. At the moment the only way we know if a ship is connected to the district that we are fighting in is someone in EVE telling us. With most dust corps using team voice chat EVE players don't have any way to alert Dust players that they are in orbit, apart from typing a message into the public channel that the Dust corp may have, or private chatting someone in Dust. However to check these text written messages the Dust player has to stop fighting and open up his neocom, which could get him killed if he was to do this in a middle of a battle.
I suggest that Dust players should receive a pop up telling them that a EVE player has connected to the district they are fighting in for a corp match. With my great inexperience in programming I can say this can easily be done, because when a EVE player connects to a district they are telling the Dust server that orbital bombardments can be called in. A simple pop up could be shown to Dust players fighting in a corp match by doing the same thing.
This first image is to help you visualise the pop up idea I have been talking about. If a EVE player is fighting for the milita you have been contracted by then a little brightly coloured pop up should appear at the top right of the screen. This will help players who are not on the same comms as an EVE player, the pop up should be noticeable enough but not too much that it will clutter the screen.
This image shows the notification idea, but for the enemy corp. This isn't to tell them when a strike is going to happen but only for when a player connects to the district you are fighting for. At first I thought this was a bad idea, then on second thoughts it might be fair as having a notification that a pilot is in orbit for one team is a little OP.
Okay now for the off map support menu. As I said earlier there is a problem with the precision strike and the orbital strike, with some players not being able to tell between the two. At the moment both of the strikes are listed under orbital support, the problem here is that the average Dust player will mistake the precision strike for a orbital strike just because it is listed under the orbital support menu.
My proposal is that orbital strikes and Warbarge strikes have their own separate menus, this could help a player distinguish between the two. The orbital strike menu could also say if a strike is available with a distinguishable colour highlighting the words "Available" to show that it can be called in. I suggest that it says if an orbital strike is available next to it, as well as highlighting it with a colour, just in case a player is colour-blind.
After choosing to use an orbital strike I recommend that a sub menu should come up with the words [Ready to fire] next to it, while glowing green to show that it is ready to fire. This menu should only be accessible if the orbital strike option is available.
Last photo. This image is just to show what it would look like if an EVE player is not connected to a district, so the option of an orbital strike would still be there but it would just say that it is not available.
Well that's it, if you think otherwise please leave a comment explaining what you think should be improved, if not then like this post to support it. |

I actually found this thread by looking something up on google... this is a great idea and can't seem to fathom why nobody has responded to this. So with that, I am interested to see what everyone has to say. The pictures are awesome and I think this could go far if the publicity was there for it. |

In Uprising we will get brackets showing any and all ships that have connected to the district, there is also a good chance (purely going by the fact that the devs have called them brackets, and how easy it would be to code) they'll differentiate between blue, red and grey (neutral).
So that'll hopefully sort out the first bit. |

Good effort on the pictures ... I support better notifications etc. but I don't doubt they have made improvements already in this area for Uprising.
I would really like to see a return to the old notification of when a strike has been earnt ... or better still a bright green notification like you've shown in your friendly pilot connected image. The current notification goes unnoticed on a big telly. |

I think there needs to be a HIGH-VISIBILITY pop-up to notify us when Orbital support is available, but the alread-announced addition in Uprising should allow us to see if there's a Tac Strike available by simply looking up.
It would be nice to have a small, but permanent, on-screen prompt that shows when your Off Map Support options are available, so you can be reminded with a quick glance at the bottom or side of your HUD without needing to bring up menus or leaderboards to figure things out. |
