I'm not one to toot my own horn, but I had such a fantastic day today I had to share!
My gunner and I today took down 7 tanks (2 of which were assists), and 1 drop ship with my Methana. I'm sharing this with you not for kudos and cookies, but rather to reveal what is possible. so often, I see ppl pass up lav's and move onto HAV's. I have played eve since the beta, april 2003. One piece of good advice you will usually receive is that you shouldn't train for battleships until you can fly a cruiser properly. I believe that statement holds true here.
When I i told my corpmates that I was thinking of skilling into LAV's, i think some of them thought i was nuts. Now many of them are training turret skills on their own behalf. If you have been considering specing into LAV's, you will not be disappointed. your friends will train turret skills without even asking them to. you will and can survive an entire match with out loosing your trusty LAV. You can make isk. Tanks can be destroyed by a single small blaster turret.
for those of you who are skilled and lucky enough to take down my SweetPea, you cost me 415.7k isk every time. This is my gift to you. Thanks for the Memories!!!

Whats its survivability like against swarms and forge guns? i've never seen a LAV take more than 1 or two vollies from either and survive, but i'd be quite impressed and change my opinion on lav's if it was possible. Pretty sure i'm going to stick to my rail gun HAV though for killing tanks :P |

A good skilled LAV driver with over 5 mill of dedicated SP can take about 4 hits from any standard AV weapon in the game atm.... |

with all modules active on my armor tank it takes 3 AV grenades OR 3-4 direct militia swarm hits, OR 2-3 direct militia forge gun hits.
the turret puts out just over 600 dps base damage for a sustained 12-13 seconds |

Fellow LAV Skiller. I am with you. though I haven't engaged tanks with my LAV, I do buzz them often and survive.
The only thing that really REALLY gets me is the general population sees LAVs as a free for all. I can't count how many of my 200k + LAVs have been flat stolen.
I was in a game alone the other day where I jumped out to drop a drop link and a player who only by chance was in the same squad as me with a mic jumped in my LAV. This guy was not a newer player, or at least he was skilled enough to when later on when I informed him that the squad earned enough for an orbital, he knew how to drop one without explanation.
I've been trying to spread the word in local chat. But I would prefer a system that wouldn't let a friendly player whom hasn't skilled into a vehicle type not be able to drive one. |

usually the first thing a blue dot does with your ride is drive it into an enemy railgun turret!
I never bring in my ride unless i got a dedicated gunner from my corp with me. I don't often leave my driver's seat, but when I do, I always ask them to take the driver's seat until I return. 95% of the time when we are rollin, i stay in the driver's seat, and my gunner doesn't leave the turret/passenger seat.

There's no way any LAV can take 4800 damage and survive...?? (Dmg from std forge)

you have to keep in mind the time involved in taking those shots, and that time being used to recharge/boost shields and rep armor |
