Voice chat: Default OFF
Dubya. Tee. Eff. Question Mark?
Seriously, Who's idea was this, and why did anyone listen to them? This is a HUGE fail for a team-focused game in ANY genre. voice NEEDS to be on by default. It's completely insane that this hasn't been fixed yet. I know, it doesn't make people rage as much as some of the other problems, but it's a CORE FUNCTION that is NECESSARY for pub groups to coordinate. But on top of this, the way it works once enabled doesn't help the team very much. Next point:
Push-to-talk: Default ON
Not such a big problem, ASSUMING that the PTT button is well-placed. Pro-tip: it isn't. Move PTT somewhere LOGICAL, or turn it OFF by default. Most console games don't use PTT, the ones that do frequently default to off, and even then, they make sure it's NOT mapped to an awkward position on the controller. The d-pad is a fine place to put PTT, but NOT when a slight shift of your finger on the button results in the map or scoreboard popping up and interrupting play. That's a great way to break the flow of gameplay. People DON'T want to be using PTT when it risks getting them killed. And one last problem I think we need to address.
In-game chat: Default to SQUAD channel
This is another huge "WTF CCP?" moment. Pub matches are full of people who don't know (and frequently don't care to learn) how to change channel. They're often full of good advice though. When they're shouting that advice down into the squad chat, they'll achieve nothing more than annoying their squad, who AREN'T THE PEOPLE THEY'RE TRYING TO TALK TO.
Solutions? Well, that's easy.
Voice default ON, push-to-talk default OFF and default players into TEAM chat instead.
When you first join a match, you can hear everyone. If you're with a coordinated squad in a pub match, that's fine. Drop yourselves back into squad chat. You're competent, so you should already know how to do that. Let the randoms talk to one another, and let the guys who joined solo have the whole team worth of noobs to educate (or insult if they suck at being a helpful veteran). |

yah, voice chat on and PTT off should be defult. it dosn't make sence to have Voice chat off and PTT on anyway, because you still can't talk |

Good to see the support for this. Keep it coming though. Don't want to get buried again (this time under a wall of "new sounds" threads). |

You know this is the thing: I know there are some huge things coming in dust. Things that are so daunting, so big that I imagine the devs are all focused on it. Okay that's fine, but this is some core, *CORE,* stuff we're talking about. That, and to my tiny little mind pretty quick fixes. Take a break, make the quick tidy fixes we're all asking for. Basic game play will be improved, your beta players will be happier, and you can go back to worrying about the big stuff again. |

There are few things I dislike more than 15 people all talking at the same time. One of those things are 15 people talking, their kids in the background screaming, and their S.O. jabbering at them endlessly. |

There have been MANY threads on this subject. unfortunately this has been this way since the first build. i have personally created a thread asking for this. the latest one i created was right before the public beta.
unfortunately with all the threads i have NEVER seen a DEV reply as to why it is this way and if they ever will change it even though i am sure they have to know by now the majority of players support having voice chat ON by default.
maybe you will get luckier than the last merc's asking this same question and actually get an answer. |

I'm absolutely content with Push to Talk, and I wish more console games had the option by default. It cuts down on the chances of some idiot's TV feeding back through his mic because it's up too loud, or his awful music, etc. If Battlefield 3 had Push to Talk, it would be a godsend- and on BF3 voice chat is by default limited to your immediate 4-person squad and there's still a good chance you'll be stuck listening to some yahoo. |

I don't mind the idea of having push-to-talk on by default, but I find that the positioning of the button is problematic enough to make it a bad idea with the current control scheme.
If the button wasn't right in the middle of two functions that rip you out of having any combat control at all, it would be fine.
The main problem is the voice defaulting to off, and the game defaulting you to the squad chat channel. It's at least as much because of the lack of INSTRUCTIONS about voice as anything else as well. The game doesn't EXPLAIN what the voice chat is doing or how to get open comms. |

i would be okay with default push to talk enabled, AS LONG AS THAT PERSON CAN HEAR PEOPLE WITH MICS
i try to organize my teams but i have absolutely no friggin idea how many people can actually hear me |

Would also be nice if it threw the person's name who's talking onto the corner of the screen. If you're playing in a squad with friends, it wouldn't be an issue, but when playing a pub match it can be difficult to tell who's talking, where they are and who they're talking to. And when it's you, whether or not the dude knows you're talking to them. |
