I've never played EVE, and I'm a bit confused here...
Does this game takes place in our universe? Are we playing as humans, and are the Amarr, Gallante, Caldari, and Minmatar simply different 'nations' of people, or are they actually separate species entirely?

Well in a sense you're still playing as a human, you can thing of it like this. Galleante are White people, (Along with ammar kinda) Caldari are the Asians, and Minmatar are the blacks of space. |

New Eden is divided into five major empire factions: the Amarr, Minmatar, Caldari, Gallente, and Jove. Of these, the Jove remain segregated, resulting in common references to "the four empires". All five are of human origin; their ancestors entered the cluster thousands of years ago through a natural wormhole. Though most of the first settlements collapsed when the wormhole suddenly closed, a few survived. TodayGÇÖs races are the descendants of those scattered colonies.

According to eve lore, humans had advanced and were looking for new space to colonize, don't remb exactly how it goes but they built the eve gate, gate to new Eden, there was some problems with the gate black hole or something that caused it to no longer function, leaving the colonists stranded in new Eden. Eventually they broke apart into new factions and began exploring space again and well. Hated each other, since so many years had passed each faction had begun its own government and customs.
Eventually they came across the Jove. Which looked human but not quite and are extremely technologically advanced.
I'd say Jove is the only one not human, but as been hinted as they too came from new Eden, just evolved. |

A short history of new eden as interpereted by an internet guy with questionable qualifications:
A really long time ago the awesome people of earth went into space and were colonizing every planet they came across. A couple thousand years later they found a giant wormhole in space that led to a completely uncharted cluster of stars and were like "cool let's colonize the **** out of this place".
They built a bunch of colonies and people were rich out of their minds with the resources they were exploiting and OH NO THE GIANT WORMHOLE BLEW UP FOR NO REASON. Colonies near the wormhole were obliterated, the survivors were panicked and completely cut off from their supply lines and the rest of civilization.
The lucky colonies were set up on habitable or terraformed planets, the rest of them starved.
The sheer struggle to survive that ensued resulted in dark ages where everybody completely forgot how to create the crazy awesome technology they had. Except for the lucky Jove bastards, they got away scott-free and spent the next ten-thousand years using science to redefine what it means to be human.
Anyways about 10 thousand years of really boring history happened before the surviving colonies who became Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, and Minmatar eventually rediscovered space flight, arose from their cozy temperate planets (except for the Caldari who apparently lived on the planet Siberia) and found new reasons to hate each other in space.
TL;DR We're all human, just with really pronounced ethnic differences from 10k years of living on separate planets |

That stereotype isn't even close to correct.
We are humans. Each empire has many different cultures and racial subtypes. I for example, am a Sebiestor, which is one the the seven major tribes of the Minmatar Rebublic. The Brutors are typically seen as 'black', the Sebiestor are generally white and the Vherokior have an Asian appearance. You can choose from one of three cultures within each empire. Each has one that tends towards Asian appearance.
We are about 26,000 years into the future from today on Earth. People have evolved based on planetary conditions.

Sorry, but I know Eve lore quite well. The Jovians are truly human as they originated directly from the settlers of New Eden like all the other empires. The only reason they look so different is because they played around with their genes too much. They are currently suffering an illness as a result. The only reason they still kick ass is because they are so damn advanced. |

Read last sentence of post, where I put they too came from new Eden just evolved, ie genetic engineering or just time. |

All races in EVE are just that, different races and cultures that developed from human settlers from Earth who were trapped in this distant cluster of stars after the collapse of the EVE gate ~15,000 years ago. After collapse, the settled worlds were isolated and lost to one another, leading to distinct cultural differences arising on each of the worlds. Many civilizations didn't make it through the dark ages. |

Not exactly (each faction has multiple races) but close enough to explain to newcommers in one sentence.
Also cultural differences probably define each even more, Ammar are slave holding feudal theocracy (gold). caldari a state run by corporations (gray cold steel), Gallente a true democracy (cyberpunkish hightech). Mimmatar are tribes in space (rust and old).

The "races" are kind of like races and not all functionally identical like human ethnic groups on Earth today are. In EVE, the collapse of the EVE gate that joined New Eden to the Milky Way galaxy caused the New Eden colonies to fall into ruin. They became isolated for many years, and eventually rediscovered space travel and eventually spread out and began forming interstellar empires. This resulted in bloodlines and ethnic groups that diverged just enough to be noticeably different from one-another. They're all humans essentially, although the Jovians are less so, as they became an advanced culture much earlier than the other human diaspora in New Eden, and their technology is quite a lot more advanced than everyone else's, such that they are highly engineered genetically. Still, technically human, but more of a Human+ deal. |

IIRC, that used to be part of the official background, but CCP dropped it a few years back.
I don't think the others had official links to any modern nation, though. |

Caldari is the only race to emerge off a planet that wasn't fully terraformed. Caldari Prime is still effing cold place to live today even. Terra-forming tech in eve is third rate in most scifis. However there is a multi-trillion isk project in the works to explore better terraforming technologies.
Also of note, all minor bloodlines are other colony survivors themselves.
But wait until they start throwing in racial blending. |

Edit: apparently the political party that ****** came from is censored...??
Edit: apparently the fascist leader of that one terrible party is also censored.
Edit: the Caldari must control the forums... Also Caldari is auto-capitalized on my iPad....also none of the other races are...The Caldari must own Apple now too. Darn corporate fascists... |
