What exactly are they good for? Is it smart to use them on my Heavy? |

They aren't that great for a heavy. They are good against armor, groups of mercs, and when you are above the enemy. They are more of a support weapon, not great 1v1. A little more searching on the forums will turn up a lot on them.
But this just occured to me... Since they have a pretty big splash damage, one thing they could be really good at is keeping shields from regenerating. If you have enemies skirmishing in front of your base firing every 4-5 seconds near them, even if it just does minor damage means their shields wont regen. If you can safely do this, it means your team has a good chance of flanking them from a better position. |

They are entirely useless on a heavy as carrying a nanohive when using massdrivers is almost mandatory for effective play. Heavies can't carry any sort of equipment.
PErsonally I run massdrivers on my logistic suits as they are great support weapons. |

Scouts make decent MD wielders, as they can scuttle their way to the high ground easier. It's a very situational weapon, and sluggish heavies won't be able to position themselves fast enough to take advantage. |

I just tried adding a Mass Driver to my Nova Knife Scout, and I LOVE IT. THANK YOU. I'm getting kills much more frequently and helping my team in many ways. |

Mass Drivers: Good against scouts, crowds, and armour. If you have a good one, people get scared as hell. Disadvantages, people keep complaining about them. Rightly so as well. I love my Mass Driver. |

Well the complaints against mass drivers are from people that, probably, have never tried to use one. They're a very difficult weapon to control and can be a real pain during CQC and extremely inaccurate at Long Range. Not to mention it's the only Primary weapon in the game that you can kill yourself with if your not careful.
The Mass Dirver is an excellent weapon for Crowd Control but it can be used on a solo level as well. It's main attribute to that is the fact that it causes your enemies sight to shift when they are hit by the Explosion. Which makes it recommendable for CQC. However terrain plays a big part in the mass Drivers life. Because of the natural arc of the payload, hitting somebody above you or at a slant is very difficult. It's best used when above someone, and scouts like to use it while jumping so they can get a better view of the ground.
The mass driver CAN Be a very high damage weapon provided you land a direct hit with your payload instead of a Splash. But that's easier said than done. I find a well spec'd Type-II Assault or a Heavy can take 4-6 shots (practically a full clip) before going down and that's assuming all your shots connected.
TL;DR
No Mass Driver is not a GREAT option for Heavy.

Mass Driver can also be very rewarding when used properly. I was running Mass Driver in Manus Peak, and there was a red dot behind the high landing that everyone fights over in Ambush. I was running up the terrain as a teammate saw the red dot. Not really quite thinking about it, I fired a charge over top. It scored a direct hit, because I got a kill.
Mass Driver takes skill to use, but after you get used to it, you can pull of incredibly feats - like how I shot over that landing basically blind, with nothing but my guess of where he was and some experience of how to elevate the mass driver.
Great fan of your work Free Healing, keep the faith! |
