All these threads popping up have really got me thinking....just what IS a heavy machine gun? Apparently it's supposed to do less damage than an assault rifle, and have a range similar to a shotgun.
See, I was under the impression that a heavy machine gun is basically a mini gun, firing thousands of rounds down the range before the barrel overheats. Clearly, I've envisioned it wrong, and I'm just curious if someone can explain to me exactly what the HMG is, since I clearly don't understand. |

A Heavy Machine Gun is a lightweight, low powered gun that slowly fires 10's of bullets an hour at low velocities that stop at arm's length distances and overheats in a matter of nanoseconds.
Or... at least that's the impression I get from the qq threads... |

Real life =/= video games.
Could you imagine if we applied real world values to all the weapons in the game against vehicles/players/etc? LOL 
Online games are all about balance, get over it.

It's not really a HMG as much as it is a Minigun but even then I don't think miniguns are supposed to spray all over the place like that. |

It is all about balance, I agree. That's why I just go around to the side of them and engage them from behind or the side on my terms. It's not terribly imbalanced... Just don't charge directly at someone with an HMG... because that only makes sense. |

Actually no, I didn't. But for discussion sake, how about you be more specific. Do you want to know what a HMG is in real life, or what a HMG is in a online FPS game in which the main goal is balance? |

Disadvantages: Low accuracy, long reload time, long barrel spin up speed, heavy, can overheat.
The HMG in this game is missing the crucial feature of winding up before it starts shooting. It also is super accurate. For balancing purposes, the bullet damage has been reduced to accompany these problems. I would rather the HMG be more like the Wraith from Resistance 2. |

When I think of a Heavy Machine Gun, I think of M2 Browning, Kord-12.7 mm, Type 77/Type 85. What I see in Dust is similar to the M134 Minigun. I don't think I would dub a Minigun an HMG, but it is CCPs game, they can call it what ever they like. |

In Real Life, the heavy machine/gatling/mini gun is a death hose, the head of a metal-breathing dragon, a means to cut scores of men in half in a single sweep.
In videogames, it is either a rare and limited gem of havok or a morbidly obese assault rifle, an automatic gun for compensating for lack of variety in the games arsenal.
In Dust, they are trying to make it both. |
