I'm lacking in the science dept, but isn't mass driver another expression for a gauss gun / railgun? Seems like a pretty limp railgun if you ask me... |

Well since we aren't launches things into orbit I guess the term loses its meaning a little bit ... would it help if ccp told you each mass driver round weighed 60 lbs?

I have to agree, the name makes no sense. Until I saw it used in game, I thought it was a gauss cannon type thing. Maybe it's not really a explosion, maybe it's causes a localized gravitational/inertia field that warps space time, completely effing whatever mass is in the range of effect. But then, the strength of the effect should reduce logarithmically. |

Talk about nitpicking.
Perhaps they are just colloquially known as mass drivers in the game universe, in the same way scrambler pistols don't actually
scramble anything. Or that tactical sniper rifles have been arbitrarily named to differential between types.
I think the game has larger issues, bother socially and technically than worrying about if naming conventions fit with modern
definitions. That and its set in a universe with physics breaking FTL drives ffs |

They scramble brains, high headshot damage. Scramble is not a scientific technical term, but mass driver is, so not really a fair comparison. The actually technical term for what the scrambler pistol is, or how it works, then it fires plasma induced electrolasers. |

Thats a good point.
However I still think it is pointless to bother with this, I think Mass driver is a cool name, rather than scientific. Take the term plasma for example, its used a lot in science fiction settings, but nobody bothers to differentiate between biological blood plasma and 4th state of matter plasma. Because everyone just kind of gets it. Okay so mass drivers aren't scientific rail guns, but isn't that so there is no confusion because they already exist in game? Mass drivers still drive mass in the form of a grenade. It also suggests they have plans for grenade launchers and don't want to confuse the two weapons. |

4th state of matter plasma doesn't need to be explained and differentiated from blood plasma because if someone is blasting out superheated ionized gas, its clearly not from blood. Basically its pretty obvious, unless of course a gun is shooting out harmless goopy stuff. I suppose plans for bringing back grenade launcher gun attachments would explain why MDs aren't just called grenade launchers. Good point. |
