This is Earthshatter, here to talk about EVE and DUST. Since this is mostly about the EVE side, I've posted this in the Locker Room.
Specifically, what can change in EVE to make DUST more impactful on the capsuleers. These changes should be built up slowly, but we can agree that the current state of EVE affairs doesn't give us mercs much sway on the Star People.
Stage One: make EVE receptive, but not vulnerable. PI is the path to walk. DUST 514 is shaping up nicely as a shooter in closed beta goes. However, our current impact is limited to making a FacWar system's inevitable takeover somewhat shorter. The way PI can be accepting is simple - capsuleers wardec each other, and their PI systems become vulnerable. capsuleers contract DUST mercs to capture those PI locations on behalf of the contractor corp. For now, even in low/null, it should be restricted to wardecs, only allow War Barge strikes, and districts in non-FacWar aren't necessary yet.
Stage Two: Change Moon Mining to a PI mechanic, and include it in almost every system I'm not joking - I'm really not. Instead of a giant claw in space with minimal lore background and no vulnerability, moons should instead require moon PI to extract their precious Tech II materials. The "easy part" is that no new skills are required, and the 0.0 powerblocs can still farm their precious Technetium as nullsec max production is otherwise untouched. The catch for them is, because it is now PI, almost every star system has it now, including hisec. Moon colonies in hisec give (obviously) far lower resources than null, and every colony in the cluster must have an anchored POS with silos (hence restricting the security status to 0.7 and below)
Stage Three: DUST strikes! make the new Colonies vulnerable, and put districts on every available planet. This stage is the simplest to code EVEside once the prior groundwork is done, but it has the greatest impact once players are used to the Moon Colonies, nearly flooding the market with Tech II, districts are added to the moons and DUST players can now take contracts to attack them. Now is the time to change non-FacWar PI to a district mechanic, as it will complete DUST interaction in one fell swoop. DUST is now in the end-game for both Industry and PvP, with only three EVE changes. Although DUST planetary control can still be factored into sov, it is moon colonies and t2 production that will make it integral for owners to watch.
The end result: EVE can function fine without DUST, but DUST becomes absolutely necessary for Tech II production, and is now worthy to stand alongside its big brother. The impact of the final stage, due to the power of Tech II, will be unbelievable for any other game to even come close. Those who cannot adapt, die. The resilient will be tested. The powerful will be challenged. And one shot... could change history. |

Octavian Vetiver wrote:[i]brings up ring mining, and how the T2 market would be flooded Right, I understood that it would severely drop the prices on Tech II, just for availability. Hisec moon mining, if this type of thing was done, would have to take at least a full day for enough mats to even work with - so that null still has power, just not as much. And ring mining is likely the better solution to EVE's moon-mining problem. it caps resources per downtime, and is vulnerable to pirate attack. Even if restricted to gas giants (the only planets that maintain rings of lunar-like material), it would increase accessibility and be easier to back in the fiction. I knew about this solution, but offered a different one that would give DUST incredible power over it. As for DUST, we need an impact on the economies of nullsec, or else those capsuleers won't really have a reason to use DUST - causing this grand merger to wither on the vine. I have faith in the District System, but I sometimes wonder whether it is enough.
@Vyzion: Capsuleer = EVE player. This stems from their use of space pods ("capsules") to interface with ships and grant immortality.
PI = Planetary Interaction. Until now, this was the only way capsuleers could work with planets, and it stemmed from dropping a Command Center onto the planet, and scanning for resources. With DUST, this system needs a revamp.
FacWar = Factional Warfare. The process of joining militias of the four empires and fighting to control certain lowsec systems for unique rewards. DUST is already a part of this, but it only reduces the requirements to flip a system. Not completely necessary.
POS = Player Owned Starbase. Mostly an industrial center, POSes are currently the only way to mine moons.
T2 = Tech II. EVE's version of Prototype gear. Currently, almost all T2 needs Technetium, which only comes from one section of 0.0 - think EVE's version of real-life "Blood Diamonds".
Moon Mining = The extraction of moon materials using a POS. Currently, on top of the monopolized control of one of the products, the device that does the actual extracting is invulnerable while the POS is fueled and online. This means that the monopoly is completely untouchable when backed up by the owners' blobs (which are the biggest in the game). This was part of the inspiration for my OP, although Octavian pointed out that my way might not be the best way.
And as for your graphics - EVE is beautifully optimized. WoW on medium settings is much harder on a comp than EVE at maximum. a 2004-average comp can run EVE once the settings are tweaked. My comp, a 2011-average HP laptop, runs it at almost-complete maximum without trouble. Lag is also not a major problem, as the server itself only updates once per second. There is also Time Dilation for less lag during epic-scale fleet fights. If the game fits your playstyle, take out a trial account, and sub if you like it. Your computer isn't going to die from it. |
