Quite simple, free to play game should not require beta testers, players, people already playing and supporting the game to spend hundreds of dollars to continue playing. In the same vein people who've spend money on Dust (in the form of AUR/Merc purchases) should never be required to buy an entirely new console simply to maintain access to the goods/services they've already payed for.

But I think this is generally a given. Wouldn't there likely be compatability issues like there was with the PS2 to PS3? |

It wont.
Dust 514 will be supported by CCP, it will have PS3, PS4 support, and perhaps PC, and WII U. It might have XBox support but I doubt it because Microsoft are assholes. |

If they plan to keep the game around for years to come eventually they will have to drop support for PS3 and force people onto a new platform. They did it with EVE when they changed the game engine, and again when they make the graphics better. They force people to get new graphic cards to keep playing. That's people that are paying a monthly subscriptions as well not just a free to play game. Though it seems a little early to be looking at this as a possible issue when its a game that is still in beta. |

The PS4 is apparently due out in December, if you believe the early reports. Looking to the past to see the future, the supply of games for the PS2 dwindled rapidly after the PS3 came out, as did the availability of PS2 consoles. Taking advantage of the PS4's power would probably make a fair few of CCP's aspirations for this game easier to achieve.
So, pretty foreseeable, really.
I'd expect to get a good 2 years out of it on the PS3 exclusively, see it as a PS3/4 for 1.5 to 2 after that, and see CCP abandon the older platform (with a major upgrade as compensation / motivation) thereafter.
... Speaking from next to no knowledge whatsoever, of course. |

ccp would make a massive financial blunder if they shifted to ps4 on the release of the ps4 i believe it would be a good idea in around 1 and a half to 2 years not on release of it tho |

You assume this game will be around by that time. You have all played this game so far what confidence do you have in ccp at this point? |

Because, first they have to get chips.
Rumor is that both Morose Stuff and Silly Carp have gone with AMD. That wonder killer of fabs around the world and nobody is getting good yields. So either console showing up this year, in quantity will be entertaining to watch.
AMD has had a miserable last 18 months for yield issues with everything they build. So ramping up two consoles with very similar parts is destined for ... lots and lots of headlines. On time shipments? Not so much.

Yea- sony actually had 2 consoles in this generation. It's partially because most PS3s can't play PS2 games too.
I'm looking forward to a PS4 release. PS3 is old and is holding back the games. |

I thought Sony said most games aren't pushing the PS3 to its boundaries. I checked for an official claim by Sony but it's all just hobbyist journalist sites who think they're good at bringing in new news but mostly copy and rewrite from other sites without official talks with representatives.
But I don't think we should expect a PS4 release just yet, at least until March when they announce it. March isn't far away so there's really no need to get excited and start creating theories on it.

Is it though?
In any case, with Dust being an exclusive, I imagine it will perform a lot better for the PS3's capacity. If this is the case, let's not hope and wish for a PC and Xbox port of the game like the whiners do on every single one of the Facebook updates of Dust, as it will never perform as good as it does on the Sony devices.
I know it's off-topic but the PS3 is great and everything, I love it, and I do look forward to the PS4, but the PS2 is what has the special place in my heart... |

Make no mistake about it. The PS3 is being pushed to it's limits. Either that or this modified version of UE3 is not properly optimized.
I think the game will benefit enormously if and when it changes to the new hardware. Right now, the PS3 is struggling to render at anywhere near an acceptable frame-rate for a competitive shooter. |

Whether the PS3 processor is being pushed to its limits is immaterial. The PS3 as a device is. An eight year old GPU. 512MB of slow (by today's standards) DRAM. Half of which is dedicated for video use and the RSX physics engine. A slow laptop HDD which need all data to be decrypted/encrypted at all times.
The Cell processor is a dead product and is no longer considered a viable option for any anything except the PS3 even by IBM. The very slow support by Sony with adequate developer libraries made getting up to speed on the system by early adopters very expensive.
The Xbox (cough) has 512MB of DRAM as well but the split is adjustable by the game developer which does give a significant advantage depending on the requirements of video versus processing needs.
Both consoles are causing the business to slow down. Younger users want modern equipment. This is their fathers game console or at best their much older brother's. Now consider the average Young Adult (21 and under), this is the same console they have played their entire gaming life. Certainly their entire hard core gaming life. Unless they are mostly mobile gamers. Which have had three generations of systems since the first PS3.
Both systems really needed to be put out to pasture last year. It will give PC gaming a significant advantage over the next three years.
As a side note, I find it hysterically funny that the PS3 and Xbox 360 used PowerPC processor by IBM and now the rumors say that they are using similar processors by AMD. Even the WII-U is using AMD/ATI graphics. Maybe they should use a standard system? Like a PC for instance.

What an enormous load of twaddle.
Dust would benefit enormously from more powerful hardware. Look at it in it's current state! It's barely running at 20 frames per second! |

I think everyone is loling at this. But it's also understandable. How much money did Sony spend on their cell processor? Plus, with the new xbox coming out soon there's no way Sony is going to wait a year to put out their own new console again. Reinventing the wheel takes much longer than using one that already exists and is in production ;). |

Cheers, Cross They already said it will only be a PS4 only game when Sony pulls the plug on the PS3. Given how long the PS2 hung around, I don't think you're in danger of being forced to upgrade anytime soon. |

Must of missed that, do you have a source link?
@Ceerix MKII Upgrading computer components, or frankly even buying a whole new computer =/= being compelled to buy a new console. There are manifold reasons for this. |
