Do you know the name of Wow's latest expansion? Of course you do. Why? Because it was TV's in Movie theatres and on Bus stops! Now how many people actually look at trailers for EVE or Dust of their free will? I'll bet not that many. Don't get me wrong, PC gamer and Facebook are great places to advertise but it's not enough.
Just running one advert in a country with a decent broadband connection should get people talking. They'll blog about it, maybe mention 'they saw an ad for a decent looking game on the telly, must be new'...
I'm just stating the obvious at this point. Just take it under advisement. |

I don't know about you, but every website I go to had ads for EVE Online long before I knew what World of Warcraft was. They are everywhere for me. Now, this may now be due to the fact that I play EVE, and Google knows my search history so their adsense is putting up EVE ads for me.
But even before I played EVE it was everywhere. CCP has a pretty good marketing presence online. |

Pretty sure I read something official a while back about an advertising budget.
Sorry no links. If I recall it was an outside investment in the millions???? |

I'm sure this is the second thread I've responded to on this topic, anyway....
Do you have any idea how much it costs to advertise on TV?
"How much does TV Advertising cost? To work out the TV Advertising costs for a specific programme or channel, you will need to establish two things, firstly the average TV viewing figures and secondly the traded cost per thousand. For example, to advertise Nationally in This Morning on ITV1 in April 2010 buying adults, would be calculated as follows; Adults Viewers for This Morning = 1 million, ratecard cost per thousand for Adults in April 2010 = -ú8.21/1000. Therefore 1,000 x -ú8.21 = -ú8,210 per 30 seconds."
Source: http://www.tvadvertisingcosts.co.uk/
Keep in mind that this is for advertising in one country, during specific hours of the early morning, at a specific time of year, and on a specific channel.
With something like Eve Online, when would you advertise? and who would be the target audience watching TV?
Blizzard have the kind of cash so they can advertise everywhere, all the time. CCP doesn't.
Atleast we still have youtube. |

They did do an advertisement in theaters at one point quite awhile back when Tron:Legacy came out. But it was only select theaters across the country and was rolled into the previews section. And it wasn't cheap by any means. |

I'm thinking an HD redeux of the E3 trailer will work for a TV ad: no EVE lore knowledge required ("Immortal" is awesome, but how many random viewers are gonna know Jamyl Sarum? what Empyreans are?) And it shows what the purpose of the game is - fighting on the ground, to impact the affairs of the gods above.
Maybe put the E3 trailer's "I fought your war a thousand times..." monologue and ISK overlays on top of the music and action of the last portion of the "immortals" video (from the Rifter attack onwards), while showing the Moros being blown apart. |
