I would like to see orbital strikes revised. When I say OS in this post I mean both OS and OB.
As it stands now orbital strikes are used by the better team to hammer the losing team further into the ground, and rarely serve as a tacical assitance.
In the short term I would like to see the WP requirement for OS at least doubled and every squad get one orbital to start out with. This incentivises the tactical use of OS and minimises their abuse.
In the long term when we start gaining standings with npc corps, individual WPs should act like LP and be acumulated by individuals from match to match. Thus the best choice of squad lead will be the ones that have the WP to spend and the choice of using them must be balanced against the likly hood of victory.
For PC corp fights WP should never be needed and should be based soley on the ability of the corperation to bring the nessary weaapons to bear.
As an aside OS should affect all players on the field! The use of OS to assure a safe hack is rediculous and removes the player from the game world.
To cut any trolls off at the pass, I have been both a party to and a victim of what I have stated as OS abuse and have found it in both cases to be distasteful, fun, but distasteful. |

I think it's good as is. The current system works fine in corp battles.
You seem to be concerned about pub stomping. It is something that needs to be fixed, but the way to do it is with better balancing of players. Attempting to balance pub games with strikes is bound to fail.
Just because some players do not use strikes tactically does not mean that you can't. |

In gigantic, MAG-scale matches (on the horizon, and almost certain for 0.0 sov battles), this issue would be moot - as you would gain a freighterload of WP anyway, the only thing affecting who's doing the striking is how the battle's working out in space.
But for smaller maps, I do see the issue here. the WP requirements are on the high side, so an "average" team isn't going to run across the opportunity often enough. I think it boils down to requiring points gain in the first place.
Some RTS games had a regenerating resource (EndWar called it "Command Points") that governed deployments and off-map supports. I'm thinking we use that type of system for orbital support, maybe with WPs used to speed up re-usage.
I'm not sure about vehicles, but a regenerating command-bar system would do best in DUST if it governed at least Installation drops and OS. You start off with a certain percentage, then it begins to fill. Say you have 50 units maximum and start with 10. Then it fills up at 1 unit per 5 seconds. Gaining a certain amount of WP (200 maybe? that's quick enough for a squad) will add 1 unit on top of regeneration. You then spend parts of this bar for different Installations and off-site supports. values are theoretical. Supply Depot = 5 units Weapon Platform = 7 units CRU = 10 units Precision Strike call-in = 10 units Orbital Strike = 30 units.
This will allow most teams the ability to use all the tools that they can afford during a battle, while still rewarding excellence in combat.
P.S. I think this can also work for non-leader call-ins such as vehicles, just using a separate, quicker bar. I won't bore one with any details as it would be very similar to the command-level system already described. |

ahhh yes the it doesn't affect me argument. well lets take this out of the short sighted and into how this WILL affect you.
this game need a lot of people playing it continuously to succeed, that means a lot of new players. If these new players are getting their asses handed to them and then OS on top of that every other match they're not gonna stick around. Now I could give a **** less about a bunch of whiners that ***** about every thing that kills them, but this will chase a lot of tactically minded players, that were drawn in by what the game promises, because all they see is an mmo cod where being a bad ass shooter is more important, and even rewarded, then sound tactical team play.
Why should you care about this because these guys could be the ones that lead you to victory against evenly match, or stronger opponents in your corp matches in the future.
If you don't care about that, well if things continue they way they are whiners are gonna have OS next on the nerf list if things stay the way things. I DON'T WANT THAT! Do you?? So why not strengthen them and incentivise best practices, avoiding the whole issue. Besides this turns earning OS into an achievement, while keeping them relevant, instead of oh hey look its a third OS I dont need free kills for me!!. |

@Zat Earthshatter
not a bad idea, I was trying to come up with something inside the confines of the current system, but that definitely merits talking about.
Truthfully I've been puzzling over how to separate the direct connection of WP and the skill point gain from them, from their use in battle. Frankly what you are suggesting is a pretty good idea. |

The last thing this game needs is more ezmode. What kind of a RTS doesn't encourage resource management? Free OS is lame. You should have to earn it through play.

I do not see any balance problems with OS against equally balanced teams, and from how I've seen it used it actually helps the side that is slightly disadvantaged.
It seems as though you are concerned about pub stomping. Pub stomping does need to be addressed, but the way to do it is by making even teams to start. Changing OS isn't going to fix pub stomping. |

ahhhh try harder you don't get it that is resource management, you have to use your units efficiently instead of spamming tanks.
Im not asking for ****** teams to have an equal chance of winning I want tactically sound teams to have an avenue to fight a more powerful team. I'm looking for ways that OS might be a more effective force multiplier, instead of the hammer of the stronger team nailing the coffin shut.
Zat added to the conversation by offering some thing of value while you, insist on denying there is a problem.
Teams will never be equal what Im asking for is that tactical shooter that was promised. Yes against teams that are closely matched the OS mechanism works well. However for teams that are moderately unbalance in power fights are one sided, and to that tanks, the hungry wolf pack effect, and OS, and a moderate imbalance becomes an overwhelming balance issue, that no tactics can overcome.
OS are unique in their ability to spread out players and their ability to ad fire support any where on the map at any time. If you balance out OS you can emphasize tactics over brute force. Im proposing we balance it but with out removing the reward aspect which is important.

Actually blob warfare is a problem that has plagued EVE online and CCP has struggled for years to find some way to fix it inside the constructs of the game with ............some ..........success.
Here we have a mechanic built in, but in its current iterations, it servers the blob far better. leading to the weaker team being scattered and the hungry wolf pack effect, where any one or group who attempts to turn the match around is mobbed by the entire team looking for kills, preventing the weaker team from even starting to building OS, even if they do have some excellent squads. |
