I'll start off by saying, that the term "Open Beta " in the console World means "Demo", at least to the casual gamer. Regardless of how you cut it, that's how people are going to view it. The hardcore DUST fans that wanted in on the Beta are already playing it, and been playing it for months, some even from the start.
DUST is a complex game, and I've seen people in local chat not even knowing how to invite a friend to a squad; so it's safe to assume that they don't even know how the SP system works.
The current tutorial video is ok...I guess... but it doesn't exactly explain much. If it's not possible to make a more in-depth video, I would suggest a Help tab, where the most common questions you think a newcomer will ask.
- How do I create a squad and invite friends
- How do I join a Corp (clan)
- I see vehicles on the battlefield, how do I call in one
^ For example
Or a tab suggesting what you should invest your SP in if you're an Assault player.
- Shield Control - Light weapon Sharpshooter to name a couple things
The casual mind of a FPS gamer on console is sit down, pick up, play. When the game gets too confusing it turns into *sit down
*pick up
*play
*doesn't understand anything
*rage quits
*calls game / demo crap (fails to see it's a beta)
*deletes off HD.
*goes on every DUST article he / she comes across calling the game rubbish
For the sake of keeping the casual gamer engaged I recommend more "hand holding" for newcomers, or you'll get more people on sites with a comment section saying DUST is rubbish, and even more clueless people saying "Thanks! Saved me the hassle of trying it"

This may not have all the flaming potential and drama inducing excitement as some posts do, but honestly, people need to like and bump this post if they genuinely want to get this game rolling.
I have even heard gaming podcasts of people who play games for a living and do reviews commenting on how this game seems like it will be highly complicated and for a niche crowd, as well as his inability to grasp it himself (some former 1-up guy, they have a few podcasts they do)
While this game is certainly more complicated and I enjoy that fact, you NEED to give a very indepth tutorial and QA, it will help build a fanbase, casual included. Casuals of today are tomorrows hardcore gamers who get immersed, and this game, the features and immersion it promises, has the most potential to initiate this conversion.
Do this, have a meeting, hell we can bump this with certain QAs to add and ideas, but get it done by open beta. |

+1 Sir. This would be great. Honestly, I don't know if I would like all of the other casual fps players coming into DUST514. If they had an opened mind maybe........but definitely not with the COD based mentality. |

CCP does have a post asking about beta players plans for tutorials for their NPE (New Player Experience).
I'm planning on turning my "Dropship Flight School" tutorial into a video, though I don't know if I can use any video taken before the NDA lifts. CCP hasn't been detailed about their plans (or I haven't found them) |

I haven't seen that thread, but CCP wants members to make videos? By the time NDA lifts I think it might be a little too late for that.
Those kinds of videos should be in the beta as soon as it goes live. |
