Any word on how many maps there's going to be whenever the game goes to full release? I'm assuming since there's alot of planets and different variations and terrains that there's going to be alot. But how many?
What do you think? |

I'd expect a minimum of 16 maps with Ambush and Skirmish sizes as well as many map variations (weather, gravity, landmarks) |

You are dreaming this dream still?
How many maps have we tested?
Is it thousands? or just like 5ish?
No clue how they expect to launch with the minimal number of maps we've tested.
No clue how they expect to launch without testing the massive number maps they've "promised". |

Well in pretty much all games in beta stage only give the testers a very small sample of maps to play with. You can apply that to pretty much every game out there. If you take a game like Killzone 3, I believe they gave us 1 or 2 maps before giving us over 10 maps to play.
So I wouldn't be surprised if there's a TON of maps actually. I'm just curious to how many. |

Did you actually watch the video? They pretty much say that can't make all the maps truly unique. They make some height maps with special areas that can be fitted with different outposts, and other map elements, and apply different moods. They never said there would be thousands of height maps, or thousands of unique outposts, etc. It just explains how it works. Whether or not the maps will be unique or not, we will have thousands of planets to battle on.

Has anyone heard anything about this from the devs more recently than this Mar 2012 FanFest video? Given the concept at the core of Dust, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to release the game with a handful of never-changing maps like other shooters. "Funny, this planet looks like a barren desert from orbit, but now that we're down here it looks just like that forest planet we were on yesterday... oh look, an Ewok! *buddabuddabudda*" |

The districts for most barren and temperate planets are already in place. The maps themselves are procedurally generated. It means the map software looks at basically the texture of the planet and makes a 3 dimensional mapping of it. It's pretty much what Terragen does. The slotted buildings are how many of each type max you can place. The where they get placed will maybe in lowsec and most likely in nul be player determined. |

If I understand it correctly the maps will have base landscapes with modular installations and potentially a few minor landscape changes. If you pay attention a few of the maps sometimes have tall buildings and sometimes don't. Minus peak (or what not, the one with the mountains) can have the tall building in the middle (by c?) sometimes and sometimes the letter northwest is above ground and sometimes below by poisonous water. Also by the southern ground spawn point the buildings vary and sometimes have ladders |

We don't have a high enough active player base to play on ONE map yet; we're only playing on tiny fragments. There are AT LEAST 3 districts right now; the one ashland is in, and there are at least 2 different districts that the variants of skim junction, manus peak, and line harvest are on. |
