So my basic understanding is that a majority of the wealth in EVE is controlled by the capsuleers, .0001% of the total population or something, and that civilians are so poor in comparison that they play no part in EVE.
Well that got me to thinking. If only .0001% of EVE population is capsuleers, then how lucrative are civilian oriented businesses?
And Another thing, don't capsuleers eat? They may have many clones, but don't they eat to keep their current clone alive thus saving money?
So what's a business that affects everyone? The Food Industry!
So my great question is: How lucrative of a business is the food industry in EVE? If it is, will we Dust mercenaries eventually fight over large Aquaponic Farms?
If you don't play EVE, then you should be just as clueless as me, so don't answer as I will consider it void. |

Capsuleers will eat for sustenance outside of the pod. It's not really needed since pod goo acts as both a gravity dampener and a source of calories. It's made from mostly cell tissues, among other things. And since capsuleers are officially immortal in the pod. Outside the pod that's a matter of contention ,but it is possible to be backed up. Only the backed up copy would not remember the death. And capsuleers are very very powerful. All the governments are wary with capsuleers generally except for the Minmatar since Malateau Shakor is a capsuleer and the Gallente since the current president is Jacus Roden. Empress Jamyl.....blessed be Her name and selected by God to rule. Is also a capsuleer, though technically it is frowned upon and considered disgraceful for any nobles of the Houses to be capsuleers. But, even we, The Might Amarr Empire see a need for such as the pilots. |

But even pod fluid costs something. Might as well go for flavor?
Anyways, what about the civies? There have to be Agri-Business to cater to civilians. It wouldn't be far fetched neither for the CEO of such a corporation to in someway be connected to capsuleers, right? |

The recent Quafe Dust event was about a powerful soft drink company stealing information. So yes the food industry is a big deal and probably has some sociopolitical impact in the world of EVE. |

Imagine if the real world was like Eve:

In all seriousness there has to be something lucrative out of the agricultural industry as capsuleers normally depend on non-cloned citizens to do things capsuleers deemed beneath them. |

EVE University PI page
For a quick reference, here's a list of things currently produced on planets in EVE. There's quite a variety, all depending on the planetary type. It's probably way more complex than will be reflected in the Dust maps initially. Also, I'd be really surprised if there were planet types other than Barren (picture Mars) or Temperate (Earthlike) for us to battle on. Maybe later others will become available, but it would be unrealistic without further development of vehicles and life support systems for hostile environs.
There are definitely food products here (variations of livestock for instance) in addition to other basic necessities for "civies" to survive and keep the immortals appeased. I'm not much for role-playing, but there are some excellent EVE-Universe fictions available if you like sci-fi novels. Most of the stories deal with the interactions between civilians, capsuleers, and the relations between factions.
It's a very diverse and deep universe for all kinds of greedy killers to find a niche they can call home. Maybe even crackers to carry that salsa to your mouth while you watch your holoreels and drink Quafe.
Finally, there are even NPC corporations dedicated to food production and distribution. In addition to Quafe, Native Freshfood for instance is one of the default Minmatar corps. Trader Joe's in space?
