We are the 42nd Collective, a mechanical race. We are a relatively small faction (weakness: any faction with vast tracts of land), but are advanced beyond our time (strength: command of highly advanced tech) . We come from a completely artificial realm (terrain weakness 1: any untamed land, terrain strength 1: modernized areas, base terrain: a completely artificial realm with complex pathways, highly modernized and under heavy surveillance). Our millitary forces consist of computerized mechs, as do our people (terrain weakness 2: areas with strong magnetic activity, frequent lightning strikes, and high amounts of water; terrain strength 2: flatlands and plains), with our infantry consisting of specialized androids. Civilian units of the collective have a degree of artificial intelligence while having a direct relay to the Collective, with most combat units being dependent on the Collective to attain co-ordinartion (terrain weakness 3: anywhere very far from the central seat of the hive mind, terrain strength 3: anywhere very close to the current seat of the hive mind). Our prime directive: Observe, document, and conquer. Metal is better than meat!

And with that, the squad of millitary androids moved in on the logipriests from all directions, phaser rifles set to "stun", and attempting to neutralize and capture their targets for analysis. |

OOC: OK, it has the same effect. The 42nd collective is Tier 3, with the AIs of the droids acting like slightly more disciplined humans (they're intelligent and conscious, but they were created by someone else, and progressed only slightly faster than those around them. They can create more of their same kind, but don't actually know how to make an AI from scratch). For that, I'll specify an additional weakness (weakness 2: magic of any kind, as it causes disruption). I can also make another if that isn't enough (weakness 3: underground areas, as they are difficult to map using sonar). With this many weaknesses, I'll be providing the comic relief for this game.
[EDIT]: The bots are moving towards the logipriests with short range tasers instead of phasers. |

OOC: Alright then, here are the current situations in the plot threads of the Collective:
Meanwhile, at the Collective main city... A loud buzzer went off in a white room, waking the large figure of Brutus lying on the floor. A mechanical voice said through an intercom:"Welcome, Subject 89, to your test chambers. After you complete your tests, you shall be released. Proceed to the next room. Failure to comply with orders will result in a reprimand via your shock collar."
In another testing chamber... The buzzer woke up the six logipriests in a test chamber, with the same instructions issued.
In a negotiation with Sandromin... The Engineer stood before Sandromin a few hours after their alliance was formed. "The Book was in our possession at a previous time. We had uncovered it in the tomb of the previous Archnecromancer, and were researching its properties. The one called Xavier stole it and you know the rest (OOC: Can we retcon this into the story?). If you require assistance in locating and capturing him, we would be more than able to dispense any number of squadrons to provide reinforcements." the robot said. |

OOC: Vyzion, D&D is the mother of all RPGs. It's been around since the 70s, and has gone through four editions, with the 5th being in open beta. It's a table-top pen and paper RPG that's primarily fantasy-based.
Thanatos, is it okay I don't edit that part of the post? Let's say it was a database glitch, but at some time, the Collective had come into contact with the book, and had tried to study any data gained. Because according to the words Sandromin put into my mouth, the collective was at some point involved with the book, and since these guys are allergic to magic, this is the only way I can explain that.
At the logipriests' test chambers... After the priests proceeded to the next chamber, an iris aperture closed the room they had come in through. They stood in a room outfitted as an obstacle course. The intercom went on again, as the voice said:"Complete this course, starting from the designating starting point." This was a test of strength and agility, and every element of the course had sensors installed.
At Brutus's test chambers... After a few shocks, Brutus was finally greeted by an obstacle source, of course larger to fit his size. |

"Good, good." the voice said to Brutus. In the next room, a screen stood behind bullet-proof glass, along with a microphone. "This is a standard test of mental aptitude, given orally. Try to answer questions correctly when prompted." the intercom said. The screen started a pre-loaded mental aptitude test, divided into sections of reasoning, memory and concentration.
OOC: You're doing fine. Break out if you wish, though good luck finding your way through the maze-like Collective city.
At the logipriests' test chambers... >Surveillance program to Overseer A89. Subjects seem to have teleported out of their chambers. >Any sign of them in the city? >Negative. >Inform the Engineer.
Meanwhile, at the negotiation with Sandromin... The Engineer was read the message sent to him with puzzlement. "The logipriests seem to have escaped from our custody Should we pursue them?" he said to Sandromin. |

In the conversation with Sandromin... "We're doing some behavioral tests on Brutus too. I'll inform you when we get any results." the Engineer interjected. |

Why doesn't anybody tell me anything? >We're at war with them anyway. >Oh. Then I suggest we release the subject anyway. There's no use in holding him for ransom: Venezzia'd probably turn their water jets on us. >OK then.
Chutes opened under the feet of all test subjects, leading to the hold of a large helicopter, which flew a hundred miles or so before dropping off the tiger close to a forest, the other subject close to a city of [DATA EXPUNGED] (which means the writer was too lazy to write something), and Brutus in the middle of the desert, a brigade of sandmen scrutinizing his every move, undetected.
The conversation with Sandromin... "We have just dropped off Brutus in the desert. Your people are watching him closely to see what he does. He is at your mercy, a person of high importance in Venezzia. Here are his test results." A strip of paper issued from his arm, containing Brutus's physical test results (the mental test results were listed as non-applicable due to uncooperativeness on part of the test subject), plus notes about his general reaction to disputes. |

>Observatory S19 reporting. Electro-magnetic analysis of the sun shows that helium levels of the sun are surpassing the hydrogen levels at an alarming rate. Evidence points to impending supernova in approximately 200 years. >Initiating directive SP-3...
And with that, the Collective's hive mind collected all the data it knew about space travel, effectively initiating the first space program on Dustia. The advanced nature of the data surprised even the hive mind, causing it to ponder if those who designed their race had departed to the stars, or were even of this planet in the first place.
OOC: Supernovas don't happen that quickly, so even if the sun is already a red star which has just restarted its nuclear reactions, (usually rapidly, relative to the time something important happens in the solar system, which is still very slow, causing a supernova) that nova is still quite some time away. |

The facility overseer program quickly recovered from the shock. It dispatched two repair drones, only these were equipped with medical supplies used to treat test subjects. After medical attention was dispensed, the program recognized her as a logipriest, one of those that had been tested on the obstacle course. After moving her to a cell, the program reported to the Hive Mind:
>Logipriest(1) acquired. Subject is female and was heavily wounded when she arrived at the laboratory. Subject was assigned a cell. >A Council is being held in Venezzia. The logipriest will be brought there. She might provide a valuable insight on the world's situation. >EVENT(VenezziaCouncil).time not defined. >A week from now. >Moving subject's cell to departure gates.

A few rushed over to their fallen comrade's husk, downloading his AI program and memories just in time before his body shut down and notifying the others by instant message that the captive logipriest had escaped. As for the point of the Secret Council, we must all make some sacrifices for the peace to be maintained. Some constraints must of course be put on their operating capacity, but that is to be decided later. The logipriests' rights of sovereignty on their nation have no reason not to be recognized, as their stated breeding rate would be enough to repopulate the whole island. >There appears to be a transmission of an unknown source. It contains numerous encrypted files. >Check it for viruses. >Checking... Check complete, no viruses found. >Decrypt the files. >Decrypting... Decryption complete. Less file\ 1...
GREETINGS, COLLECTIVE. IF YOU CAN READ THIS MESSAGE, YOU HAVE REACHED OUR LEVEL OF TECHNOLOGY. SADLY, IF YOU HAVE HAD ENOUGH TIME TO DO THIS, WE HAVE GONE EXTINCT. A MADNESS HAS BEFALLEN HALF OUR NATION AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING, WITH NO APPARENT CAUSE NOR CURE. YOU MAY HAVE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR ORIGINS, SO LET US EXPLAIN. YOUR RACE WAS CREATED BOTH AS A DOCUMENTING TOOL, A DATABASE OF KNOWLEDGE, AND A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT. AN AI GENERATION PROGRAM WAS CRAFTED BY OUR FINEST PROGRAMMERS TO CREATE UNIQUE AI FILES FOR EVERY UNIT. IT IS INADVISABLE TO MODIFY THESE. IF YOU GOT THE REST OF THE TRANSMISSION, IT SHOULD CONTAIN ALL THE KNOWLEDGE OUR NATION HAD AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING.
Within the transmission were thousands upon thousands of files on technology, science, the humanities and everything else. Even the Hive Mind could scarcely make sense out of all of it. It would take a long time to figure it all out...

Brain Damage/Eclipse + Dark Side of the Moon/Xavier- The entire album is about insanity, and I think it fits Xavier perfectly at the moment
Kashmir + Led Zeppelin 2 & 4/Sandromin- Kashmir is distinctively a song you'd expect of the desert, and the mysticism of both those albums fit Sandromin, as most of the passages involving him typically involve journeys or something completely adventurous

OOC: Man, I've been reading this for so long without posting, but the Collective doesn't really have anything to do other than develop plasma rifles from Doric tech until the Great Voyage (which I assume is the collective name for the errands the Fellowship Council party will undertake). BTW, will this be a small party or an army?
Meanwhile in the Collective Military R&D building... Robotic arms finished the construction of the Collective's first working plasma rifle. Now all that was left was to test it. A military unit retrieved it and established a wireless connection to it. The weapon's plasma levels appeared on the unit's HUD, along with an aiming reticule. The unit took it to the firing range, aimed at a dummy target and fired. All that was left of the dummy was a bunch of melted plastic. Perfect. Production lines started at the Collective's weapon factories, churning out weapons for the overhaul of the robotic military.
At the Assembly... The Collective ambassador twiddled its thumbs, waiting for the rest of the major delegates to sort out this Grand Voyage and for these Ashborn to give any hint of their true agenda. |

The Collective engineer scanned the ship's innards with X-ray vision, and came up with a rough blueprint. It gestured at the chief engineer of the airship. "Your propulsion systems don't seem to be very efficient. I suggest adding some sparklers at the end of your fuel expulsion ducts to burn up any leftover fuel, hermetic sealing on the fuel injection pistons to prevent leakage..." it rambled.

Does it focus and channel the electrical signatures on a user's neural pathways into the object that is to be manipulated? Is it highly combustible and prone to act like a solid under high pressure? Or is it just so dense that no hermetic sealing is needed?" it asked curiously. |

Electromagnetic imaging can only do so much. But if you insist..." it pause for a moment. "...I will delete the file, and have done so by the time of the utterance of this sentence." The airship neared the steam-shrouded city of Diyad, with its metal cities and factories. Alkhemists manipulated matter to give it shape previously unknown or impossible in the great refineries. As the airship reached a docking hangar, a hook was attached to a ring in its side to herd it steadily downwards. A walkway was raised to the zeppelin's doors, which promptly opened. |

The Engineer chose this moment to reveal a plan. "We have been working on a space program, supplemented by Doric data, and believe we have achieved lightspeed travel, and although research speculation points to even greater speed using meta-dimensional travel, this will have to do. I present to you: Project Ark." it said, as it projected a holographic miniature image of a gargantuan space vessel into the middle of the table. "A space vessel approximately 10,000 kilometers long, housing the downloaded minds of the entire Collective, cryogenic sleep pods for 3/4 of the known populace of Dustia and Precantaria combined, databanks to house all up-to-date technological, scientific, alkhemic, magickal and historical kmowledge we have in digital format, and infrastructure building materials and supplies. It should make for a good backup plan if we ever seem to be losing." it said in monotone. "To account for the other 1/4 of the populace, we might have a solution. Although it is uncertain to work and experimental, we have developed technology to transfer consciousness. A cloned body for all disembodied consciousnesses will be grown upon arrival to the habitable planet our sensors and probes have located." it concluded. |

They've calculated the odds, and see the chances of winning very low. So, in an uncharacteristic gesture of generosity, they've developed a way for everyone on the planet to haul behinds if getting blown up in a gigantic nuclear reaction becomes inevitable. Also, your idea of our own New Eden seems interesting. How about this: We actually are in New Eden, by the time the empires have begun to re-establish contact. The Dorics are the Sleepers, which means the sleepers weren't actually human. "Magick" is actually the psionic manipulation of meta-dimensions. The Gods are actually powerful meta-dimensional entities who can only manifest themselves on planets with a large quantity of magick-users, due to them causing enough dimensional disturbance for the Gods to slip through. Iyo is a rare element (similar to element Zero in Mass Effect in its functions), which the Dorics found a way to synthesize, thus it may pass that our nations rediscover the way to synthesize iyo. Also, if you want to know how new Collective AIs are generated, here's an explanation by flashback: 10,000 years ago... The chief programmer of Macrohard Inc. was excited. His feelers arced electricity, and his beak snapped rapidly. The AI generator for their reconaissance and social experiment AIs was complete. He moused over the random generation button and clicked. A textbox appeared on his screen. It was time to find out what kind of a person this digital construct was. "Hello? Where am I? Who am I?" text that flared on the screen read. Later, the AI would be uploaded to a robotic armature, but first it would have to get used to the disembodied feeling of being an infomorph.
You get the idea. Alternate/parallel universe. That is all. Magic truly exists here... but that's besides the point. So is this an alternate New Eden? |

Standard Weapons: Projectile assault rifles, monomolecular blades, plasma weapons (still experimental and prone to overheating), humongous/mini mechs (very clumsy), stuff every modern military has (choppers, etc., but hard to manufacture), dropships. Armor worn (including different military types like guards and King's Men): Kevlar plating for standard units, titanium plates for larger ones. National Tree: None, the Collective have no use for trees. Values(such as Athens-education and Sparta-military): Hard work, the pursuit of knowledge. Notable Laws/Rights (like gay marriage, or women can't vote): Every citizen AI must bow to the whims of a hive mind, whose members are elected triennially. Notable Attractions/Landmarks: Their main city, which looks like something out of TRON: Legacy. Common Religion/Practices: None. They're atheists by default, but some have started converting to other religions now that the Collective's contact with outsiders has increased. I also think we should add a national anthem or something: Harder Better Faster Stronger (Daft Punk) |

Ner'Zul Nexhawk wrote:Nexhawk gladly nodded to that proposition. "Thank you, Alixenus," he responded, and afterwards turned to Sandromin's projection. "I hope you don't object. If you are in need of a transport, I can send one of my Phoenixes to wherever you are right now. It will certainly be slower than some other means of transportation, but it's something nonetheless."
After speaking thus, Nexhawk addressed the entire group. "I think the fastest way might be on my ship, Embershard. The vessel, as Ignatus told me, has followed your aircraft steadily all the way to Karthage and must be stationed somewhere in the bay. Thanatos, could you please show us the way?"
"We do not have much of an air force or navy, but we shall lend a portion of our vehicles for this journey." The Engineer said to Nexhawk. |

In a few minutes, a squadron of dropships landed at the port, taking their share of passengers alongside the Collective forces they already carried. 3 frigates soon arrived at the coast and lowered ramps. The Engineer soon joined the rest of the continent's ruling politicians on the Embershard. |

Sandromin Hes wrote:Sandromin had been managing the final touches on the caravan when he saw airships flying towards the Hall of Kings. It was not as if he could blame them; after all, the most opulent building would be the most logical destination. However, being the capitol building and mausoleum for past kings, it was not the staging area of the expedition. That job, rather, went to the Guild of Thought, which happened to be nearby.
Sandromin sighed. "Seems I will have to send a liaison to accommodate for this lack of direction."
Calling over an aide, Sandromin began, "Abir, I need you to-"
Suddenly, a chill ran up the Sand King's spine. Something... evil... made its presence known in Dustia. As if a slumbering titan had awoken, the feeling pervaded his mind.
"Sir! My liege, what's wrong?" began the aide.
"N-nothing... just... a feeling. A feeling of dread. Anyways, there is no time to dwell on the thought; I need you to seek the guests within our city and bring them here. The expedition is at hand."
Bowing at the orders, Abir rushed off towards the capitol.
"Whatever that was," uttered Sandromin towards the sky, "I am sure it is not good. I fear greatly for what lies ahead..."
OOC: I say that since Nimrod's [where are my manners? WELCOME NIMROD! Finally, a proper antagonist we can all relate to!) evil aura is probably magical, the Collective can feel it too (due to their magic-allergy)].
The Collective dropships swayed briefly as if rocked by turbulence, sending their passengers into panic. The Engineer felt it too, momentarily losing his balance as the equivalent of a sudden and intense headache surged through his circuits. He turned to Nexhawk and Alixenus, and turning his speaker volume down, said to both of them quite abruptly: "There's either something magical nearby or we're really in trouble. I can feel it in my CPU."

Whether we're discussing epics poems, or reading Greek Tragedies. Moments where the conversations shift. Questions like: "What makes a hero?" "What makes an epic journey?" In these moments I can't help but directly think about our exploits in Dustia, this new expedition, how far we've come, bridging science fiction and fantasy into one. It's almost hard when someone asks questions like that. I just want to say, "Great hero? Oh you mean like Alixenus of Venezzia!" "Noble kings? Like Sandromin, Nexhawk, like Lionus." "Character that represents Death, like Thanatos? No not the Greek one!" My favorite is when fate is brought up. Is Oedipus trapped by his own fate?
I just laugh to myself. Fate, an inescapable force; one's predetermined destiny. They don't even know OUR Fate. No one knows our Fate, our story, our world.
That's the beauty of it. This has been more interesting than any book, any game, any movie in my opinion. I love doing this with you guys. Crafting this story together, post by text-filled post.
If this thing ever finishes, we've got to compile it into an ebook named "Chronicles of Dustia." Then get sued into oblivion by CCP for name infringement. They also probably own all our posts, too.

So, here you go: Basic LinkAd Support LinkAlso, the final destination land is known as the "End Land". In the *imaginary* lecture, I explained that ancient Dorian maps showed this continent that had never been previously recorded to high amounts of a special type of light interference that blocks off literally any light coming out (radio waves, ultraviolet, infrared, etc), and not only that, but has terrible weather surrounding it; therefore, it's nearly always black. Only the outline of the continent remains on the old maps, so we have no idea what lies in it, no terrain, coloration, etc. (This means we can let our creativity run rampant.)

G4LRCK sent a few commands to the pilot of one of the dropship pilots to airdrop his Variable-Terrain User-Powered Two-Wheeled Transport. The vehicle's light, almost skeletal metal frame scarcely made a sound as it dropped on the ramp the Engineer stood on. G4LRCK hopped onto the small seat, grasped the handlebars and pedaled as hard as he could onto the sandy desert surface, right behind Sandromin's formation. "These 'kraws,' how acquainted are they with magic? Could that disturbance we felt earlier this day be the cause of their agitation?" he asked the sandman.

OOC: Okie dokie, then. I'll do my best. Is it okay if I play someone on the kraws' side?
Bob waited underneath the dune, his nostrils closed to keep sand out, as the galloping sound of a group of riders approached. The Voice of the Sands, his and his race's new guide, had fallen silent for a troublingly long time. He felt helpless without its guidance. O Voice of the Sands, he who guidesss us to victory over these invaderssss, what dost thou bid me do? he thought desperately. A few moments later, much to his relief, an answer came. Wait until the time is right, and pounce upon the trespassers as they arrive, O son of the desert. the Voice said. And so Bob waited, he could feel the hoofbeats of the approaching horses quite strongly now, and the scuffling of his brethren over what to do with the wreckage of the devilish vehicle had stopped, giving way to the definite silence of those ready for battle. After a few seconds, he knew the time was right, as the hoofbeats were nearly right in front of him. He sprang out of the dune, screeching "For the Voice!" as he descended upon the rider at the head of the scouting party. His hooked claws caught the man at the throat, killing him near-instantly, but not before his hand flew into the air, shooting fire that coalesced into a strange, floating symbol, obviously a beacon of some sorts. As his brothers leapt in to engage the rest of the scouting party, he snuck away quietly to the distress beacon by the kraw outpost. He took one of the torches nearby and lit the pyre. If there were more invaders to come, they had better be ready.
OOC: Just a quick something to heighten conflict. Sorry I killed the head of your scouting party, Ner'zul. Also, Nimrod, if you're still here, the Voice is your character influencing the kraws, or at least something that automatically formed from the magical energy from his reawakening.
