This is my view on the role of the Sniper from the perspective of a Logistics soldier.
Snipers are hated by many as team members that don't contribute to capturing objectives. In some cases I think the haters are correct but I do think there are good snipers out there. I've been running a low skill fit to try out this role as well but I still prefer to run logistics.
1. I think the most important role of the sniper is to eliminate the other snipers. They aren't going away and they are a nuisance and need to be kept under control. I've been defending a position only to die and see my team die repeatedly because the enemy had multiple snipers picking us off. If I see a lack of blue snipers then I'll jump into that role.
2. A sniper can provide overwatch on more than one location. That is a force multiplier. A soldier on the ground can usually only cover one objective at a time. I'm all for multiplying the force.
3. Snipers should watch for their team mates and cover their six. You may not be able to kill that heavy stomping on your team but if you can strip away most of their defenses they have a better chance. I hate the snipers that aren't providing this service. Protect your hackers!
I tried a more active, on the field, type of sniper but I failed epically at it. Maybe its just me but I think a sniper's attention is too divided when attempting to be closer to the action. The purpose of being on the fringes is be able to constantly focus on several locations that doesn't include the back of your own head. I've been know to go sniper hunting with a shotgun but that takes me away from the objectives too. Best just to snipe the snipers whether they are in the red or not.
There is one thing that I've had happen when I'm running as a sniper. Seems some have favorite spots and will sit right next to you and sometimes even melee you to get you to move. Most maps can support two or three snipers with no problems. Look at the map before you head to a spot.

Snipers need to look for swarm launchers, and having two snipers in one spot is not bad because often it takes two shots to take someone down. Another tip is to have two or three spots on the map and to rotate between them. If you see an enemy comming your way just go to another spot dont hang around. |

I hadn't considered teaming with another sniper. It would probably also help with keeping on eye on the immediate area for sniper hunting shotgunners.

A sniper almost always has a spotter, after all.
I mostly use my Assault dropsuits and don't have a reliable sniper class character yet. Its always a welcomed site to see a friendly sniper drop an enemy sniper. |

I just started finding my way around. The sniper scout was so far the role which I could fulfil best. Sniping is just part of the job.
I run ahead, trying to hack very fast before the enemy arrives. Pistol for wiping off any single opposition. When running, I always switch to pistol, because like this I can run even faster. When in no sniping position, I can use the pistol to devastating effect (when Mr Twitch does not throw me off aim too often). When in sniping position, I always try to be in a flanking position so that the enemy is distracted.
My target order in sniper position is snipers->heavies->assaults.
If in close range, pistol: vehicles -> heavies -> assaults, or "get the hell outta here".
All in all I find this class very versatile, being able to deal with every type of opposition. You pay for it by being very squishy, though. |

Im playing with the idea of a sniper with cloak aid to keep from being scanned while maximizing scanning. Im not sure if this is a waste once you fire from enemy snipers but I try to move after each shot. Unfortunately most kills take two hits and the good players move after the first shot. Patience and a spotter for counter sniping is key but at what sacrifice? Many maps give up perimeter snipers to sillohuette against the terrain so perhaps scanners are a waste. These are my first targets unless it's a high ground battle in the middle of the map. Kind of a whole different war while the battle is going on so is this effective? I think of it in the long term. Snipers on each side waiting, and if one side is keeping the other sides snipers uneasy and moving then perhaps we are buying the assault troops time until the side not winning the sniping war decides half way through that sniping isn't working out and changes to assault or such as well. Now have we helped the assaults or have we given the opposition better numbers and need to switch over to compensate for the new wave of incomings? Trying to find a happy medium on the field it seems. Knowing when to abandon a losing battle and adapt or switch over to provide support for a whole new created battle in CQC.
