HI, I haven't played online games since the original Unreal Tournament, so I genuinely suck, I've tried Dust 514 for a few hours last night (for the first time), but there's only so many times a guy can tolerate dying :/
Any tips for a noob, dropsuit config etc, that might help me stay alive a little longer?
Cheers chaps Darren |

im still pretty noobish but am hooked on the game, its been hard work but its rewarding...
aside from the fps basics id pick a spec as to what fight style suits you and start spending skill points and figuring out loadouts.
once you start making your own suit loadouts id buy at least $2 of aurum to get the militia blueprints, making all that gear free - nanohives, granades and cardiac stims are all handy.
i went down the 'jack of all trades' assault rifle/suit road, once i got a gek-38 rifle and type 2 assault suit i found i survived more and killed more. im still getting killed plenty but have raised my k/d ratio quite a bit.
its worth browsing the market for both skills and equipment, there may be things you're not aware of.
however honing fps skills and teaming up with a decent corp have been just as, if not more, important. gear only gets you so far |

Get out out your free AV fit and go up in the hills and shoot down anything that comes into the field.
Make a speed/stealth/hacking scout with shotgun and practice being invisible. If you see a red dot, run, flank and shoot them in the back.
red line snipe... but you don't want to do that.... |

Survival is tough, believe me i know.
50% of Survival is knowing the map/ knowing where to hide. Only experience can teach you that.
30% more of that is player skill. Which will improve over time, trust me, i'm a testament to that.
10% is Modules and Skills I can name a few good ones such as:
Profile Dampening Shield Management Infantry Mechanics
Armor Repair Armor Plate Shield Regulator Shield Re-charger Shield Extender |

If you have aurum, I recommend you to buy the Militia Blueprint stuff until you can fully gear a dropsuit with nothing but blueprints, including the suit itself. That way if you're low on money, you can use the militia suit to farm some ISK for yourself. Another tip would be to find a playstyle that suits you and spec for the skills associated with that playstyle.

Try joining a corp so they can help you out. *we're free to join lool* But honestly, find people who would be willing to help you out with their knowledge. Its all about learning... its all a learning experience. We're recruiting, and so are quite a few other corps. Check out our recruitment page if you want to know more. Plus, if you join a group, you have a lot more fun.
I suggest working on mechanics to help out your armor. Try thinking more strategically. Don't rush into combat, and instead keep an eye on your surroundings. Aim for longer or shorter ranges depending on your weapon. Etc. Start thinking about your playstyle and figure out what's best for you. And remember, have fun! Its not about killing, cuz there are alternatives: reviving, driving, support, etc. HAVE FUN. |

Strategies from CoD, CounterStrike, and many other fast-paced bunny hopping FPS games won't work here and will just get you a whole lot of dead.
I can't speak of my own work but the other two are definitely good and beneficial reads. I can only hope my own work has also aided others in some small way. |

Wish I would have came here the as soon as I got in. I thought I knew what I was doing, but ended up wasting a bunch of skill points. I think i'm going to go for a support role now since I can't aim worth a lick of salt. |

Welcome to Dust and good luck on the battlefield! Well now I feel even more behind the curve. What does buying the Militia Blueprint mean? I bought the Merc Pack from PSN and I can create militia level Assault level dropsuits that cost Zero ISK. Is that it? Or have I missed (with a whoosh) something even more critical to my game play? |

Under the Militia Gear tab in the market you can look at modules, equipment, weapons, dropsuits.
All the basics are there and while some might see it as a waste I've picked up one of each for both my characters and shuffle them about to get the feel for their benefits before going into their skill trees.
It's also a good backup and actually worth the AUR investment, unlike the 50-100AUR weapons that go away with their clone's death. While you'll be weak, this is actually a good thing as it forces you to learn how to play more strategically which will, in the end, benefit you a great deal once you're running the higher tier gear. |

Any gear that has a blue background are referred to as blueprints, these items will never get used up and you only need to buy one of them.
If you make a dropsuit consisting of just blueprint items it will never run out or cost you anything when you die making it a good way of getting ISK. The only problem is that blueprint items tend to be weak and restrictive with cpu and pg. |

Thanks you two. That clears it up.
I have some as it turns out but not being able to get more then one was ... confusing. I will tweak a few fits so I have the zero cost units for those totally out of control random gatherings. I finally have some specific logi and assault fits that are making a difference and they aren't so expensive that losing one doesn't break the bank. |

That's good, have you discovered a fitting that suits your specific playstyle too? Unless you want to be a Jack-Of-All-Trades, I'd recommend finding a playstyle that works with you, and start investing on the skills that help you improve that playstyle. But regardless of your playstyle, leveling up your Infantry Mechanics, Dropsuit Command and Weaponry skills is good for any fitting, as they give passive boosts to your entire character.
If you have any more questions, you are free to come back here and ask. |
