For those of you that, beside painting fellow mercs' Dropsuits with Amarr lasers and cleaning air around you with Mass Drivers, like to get more aknowledged with universe around us, I strongly recommend some additional readings about New Eden, our dear, dark and harsh cluster of galaxies.
For start, before any actual reading, watching the old intro will explain a lot about what, where and how New Eden came to be:
Eve Online: Old Storyline Intro
After that one might want to get to know more about races, civilizations, corporations and technology that occupy New Eden. Series of blogposts by fameous EVE explorer Mark726 are excellent for that purpose:
EVE Online: The Greatest Story Still Being Told
EVE is fameous for its chronicles, its so called Prime Fiction written by various authors from the early days:
EVE Chronicles
Short Stories
EVE Fiction
DUST Fiction
And if you like new Wiki design (list doesn't include some 'Short Stories and 'Fiction'), you can look here and also search by year they've been published:
Wiki:Category:Chronicles
Latest addition being called '514'.
New Eden's community likes to write, a lot, and there are many many blogs out there. Most of them are organized under so called Blog Pack, so it's easy to get overview on them.
The EVE Blog Pack
There are some awesome videos on YouTube, but one of most fantastic works have been done by Rooks and Kings corporation and there is also fan-made short film Clear Skies. Also YouTube page of CCP Games is a good place to visit.
Capsuleers and Mercenaries may easy find posts with New Eden content on Twitter by using hashtags: #EVEOnline #tweetfleet #DUST514 |

I've been meaning to ask this - why does the lore matter at all to us? It seems like WoW to me - Oh, arthas told grom to blow him and attacked him? Biig whooop. Not like I could actually control any of it or be a part of the actual battle mentioned in the lore.
So if someone could fill me in how the lore effects direct gameplay I'd be much obliged. Thanks.
It'll help me decide if I want to buy Eve or not too |

There is a thing called Live Events in EVE. Where players work together with CCP people and shape the look and lore of New Eden real time.
One of the biggest and most fameous event brought to life thing called Arek'Jaalan Project. It is/was and organization of players that worked on research of mystery of Sleepers and other old/vanished cultures of New Eden. Tons of material were produced, and even huge lirbary complex was built in dead-space in one Minmatar owned system, documenting it all (so beside wiki pages, there are actual in-game objects). For example. |

Gallente like to use drones (because they've got this value of human life thing going on), and Amarr like to use lasers (I have no idea why, I just remember reading about it a lot). There's lots of little bits of info hidden throughout the lore that can be used practically in game. You wouldn't fit a Gallente drone drone boat with missile launchers if you'd read some of the chronicles.
I guess the argument could be made that you also wouldn't fit a Gallente drone boat with missile launchers if you'd had read the dumb wiki, either. Or any of the guides for that matter.
But then, I guess it's the same as you're example. Who cares if Arthas told Gram to blow him and attacked him? Only those who are entertained by that sort of thing. But then, what's the point of a game besides entertainment? That's what it's all about. People are entertained by stories. Whether they're made by CCP or the players themselves, it makes no difference, as long as you're entertained.
I also think the story of New Eden is awesome. |

Part of the main reason they went drones was personnel. Torvils use of his ship plus the war and nouvelle ravenour left them depleted in manpower. And the caldari were ramping up with deteis tube children and the jove gave them capsule tech. Caldari had an edge. Gallente were gettin that butt whooped. |

Well, players can affect change. A player named Doc Brown is the reason Jirai Laitanen (aka Fatal, one of the leaders of the Guristas) is no longer in the Guristas. Live event.....got his rear end podded and ended up with a bad cloning issue. The current gallente President Jacus Roden was voted into office by gallente playerbase. I think they also had a hand in Admiral Etturer's eventual trial and then getting publicly executed for being a traitor for the caldari. And currently some of the base, serpentis and angel cartel supporters have been helping serpentis attack various systems in the federation. Granted the event npc's are operated by CCP devs who run the character. Given certain circumstances should an event character die I think they get relegated to being no more. Though Fatal is still alive supposedly. Just stuck in an institution for the remainder of his life. The cloning accident made him a drooling, stuttering invalid I guess. |
