DUST 514: From the Perspective of a Newbie?GǪ Noobie?... a foolish mortal depraved of any knowledge of EVE or itGÇÖs universe.
GÇÿEre the rant
GÇÿEre I begin with my GÇ£rantGÇ¥ I would like to acknowledge the many informative posts on the forums, and although each have been helpful and informative, I would like to personally acknowledge the two that have influenced me the mostGǪ

Thank you,
Perspective from a Newbie A Fool with a Neocom
As the game begins to load you hear a disembodied voice speakGǪ
GÇ£Welcome, foolish mortal, to DUST 514. I am your host GÇô your GÇÿdeployment hostGÇ¥
You tighten the grip around the controller, a breath of fright escapes your lungs and for a moment you are scared. Slowly the tension within the moment relaxes. The music from the game soothes your anxiety and as the fear seeps out of you like venom from an open wound, you laugh at yourself and think GÇ£itGÇÖs just the game.GÇ¥
You choose your character and begin the gameGǪ
GÇ£...And consider this dismaying observation: this chamber has no windows and no doors... which offers you this chilling challenge: to find a way out! Of course, there's always my way...GÇ¥
You hear maniacal laughter! |

I stood with my character in the middle of this bleak and empty room. As I moved about the room I soon realized two things; 1. My character looks like he can kick some serious ass (of which my character would be disappointed to learn that he would not live to that expectation because I am terrible at FPS) and 2. There are no doors or windows in this room. Where in the name of Holy Toto (the dog from Oz not the Jackson kid) was I? As I paced my character about the room an anxiety for escape soon began to bubble towards the surface of my countenance. An illogical thought was birthed within my mind as I soon pondered if this was the most thrilling part of the entire game; pacing around a quiet room, helpless to do anything, while a war was waged in the universe. And there was no escape! DUST 514 would be a game of people trapped within a door-less and window-less room and points would only be earned in how long you managed to stay within the room. A true test of will and the desire to exist in a hopeless and unresponsive worldGǪ
*BleepGǪ BleepGǪ Bleep*
My attention was shattered and my grim ideas faded like morning mists awaiting the sunrise. With feline-like curiosity I investigated the immediate environment looking for the elusive originator of the bleeps. I stumbled through my prison like a blind Norn looking for her crystal eye and in fruitless anguish I raged with furious fury (redundant but it sounds awesome).
Fool Cries Neocom: An Act in Short.
Opening Scene: A lonely room with no doors or windows
Neocom: GǣBleepGǪ BleepGǪ Bleep.Gǥ
Jofur Mur: GÇ£Who doth call to me within my lonely prison? Be thou angel or devil and what doth thou wish of me? I am frail and brittle, yet thou arouses longings and dreams within my being. What say thee foul angel or uplifting devil, what judgment shall you pass upon me!?GÇ¥
Neocom: GǣBleepGǪ BleepGǪ Bleep.Gǥ
Jofur Mur: GǣNoooooooGǪGǥ
The End.
Minutes dwindled into hours and the world moved in its well practiced dance as I passed my time investigating the Neocom. In short my discoveries led to this one conclusion, Neocom is your window (and door) to the universe. It encases everything that is relevant to your experience in DUST 514 and everything that isnGÇÖt practically relevant GÇôyet has potential to be in the future. You have access to the Marketplace, to join in combat, or to change the Settings of the game and so much more. As a first time player I would suggest you spend a great deal with you Neocom (after 8 hours I started calling mine Serenity) and learn the basics of the Neocom.
Tip #1: Get to know your Neocom.
Pressing the START button will access the menu for the Neocom.
You will notice a list of Categories to choose from (I will explain a few in my own way).
FIND BATTLE: You can scout out missions and battles that are available to you to join. Currently I only see: AMBUSH GÇô Blue vs Red to the death. No man left standing! SKIRMISH GÇôBlue vs Red with an overall objective of destroying the MCC (Mobile Command Center).
CHARACTER: Here you can view your characters stats and get an overall view of your character. SKILLS should me noteworthy to Newbies. SKILLS raise the proficiency of your abilities both combative and support. So before you start dropping points consider in which direction you would like to take your character. Also, I noticed there is still some option slated as COMING SOONGäó. So I have a hunch those options are going to be coming outGǪ soon? I donGÇÖt know I could be wrong.
FITTING: This menu is used to create your dropsuits. I am still inexperienced in this topic, but the gist is you can create or combine different weapons, items, and equipment inorder to create a dropsuit for use in battle. I can only share one tip for the Newbie on this subjectGǪ use MILITIA Everything! ItGÇÖs the cheapest of the cheap and you can expend it without worrying too much about it until you become Chuck Norris (better at playing) or Uncle Pennybags (filthy-rich).
MARKET: You can buy the universe here, yet you need the AUR and ISK to support the purchase. As I said before GÇ£I can only share one tip for the Newbie on this subjectGǪ use MILITIA Everything!GÇ¥ As you start in the game get accustomed to using items and dropsuits of Militia quality. These are inexpensive and shall be your training tools till you get more accustomed to the game itself. Trust you me, you donGÇÖt want to be like me and spend all your ISK on some cool weapon realizing that you canGÇÖt use it for X reason. Stick to MILITIAGǪ for now. Another tip: Most items |

SOCIAL: Keep in touch with your Corp., your Squad, or your buddies. Here is how to get your MIC on. Thank you G Sacred for the postGǪ https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=43062&find=unread
SYSTEM OPERATION: Exactly as it sounds, this is the menu to allow you to change a few things in the game. Sadly there is no option to just boost your characterGÇÖs stats to GOD-LIKE Mode. Bastards.
Thus we review what we learned today:
TIP# 1: Take the time to learn about your Neocom
TIP# 2: DonGÇÖt spend all your ISK frivolously as soon as you enter the MARKETPLACE. Support yourself on MILITIA equipment to start off with and once you garner a little more combat experience then consider what higher end equipment you would like to purchase.
TIP# 3: Buy in bulk. Most items are not permanent and you will eventually lose them during combat. This includes weapons and dropsuits. |

While i absoultely LOVE this post because:
-It made me laugh so hard i almost choked on a Jolly Rancher -It has great info for new players. -I look forward to the next post with enthusiasm
I feel that i should mention that most of these basic things are covered by the mandatory "How to be a Mercernary" Video that plays when you first create a character and then can later be viewed in the "Tutorial" section of the NEOCOM under the guise "Movie"
Great work though Jofur and i look forward to your next work xD

//INCOMING TRANSMISSIONGǪ//
HELP!!! Get me the KITTEN out of here! Oh.. holy kitten-ing KITTEN!
**The background noise is overwhelming as a conglomeration of battle sounds breaks over the receiver. After a loud explosion, which resonates with intimacy as though it detonated near to the transmitter an eerie silence falls upon the transmission. Heavy breathing and slight sobbing becomes audible after some time. **
Hello!? Is anybody there?
Somebody?
This is Jofur Mur, Immortal-Soldier-in-training, contemplating why the hell did they choose me to be Immortal in the first place. *sob* IGǪ I joined the program after a lonely and desperate night of drinking OGÇÖdouls and watching reruns of Captain America: The First Avenger film. The movieGǪ archaic as it isGǪ it got me thinking dude if I could go through some transformation like the Captain, I could be popular with the ladies and pick up English hotties like Hayley Atwell. Life would be good. Yet, it hasnGÇÖt been good.
KITTEN!
I joined the Immortal-project, the kitten-ing Immortal-project! In a closet somewhere they have a dozen upon a dozen clones of my bodyGǪ ** white-noise rips through the receiver**GǪ I was wondering ifGǪ **white-noise erupts once more** GǪdonkeyGǪ **white-noise** GǪ long shaft! I was likeGǪ *white-noise**GǪmelts in the mouth not in the GǪ**white-noise** GǪ letGÇÖs do this!
**white-noise**
GǪCopy? Are you there?
My first encounter, after joining the immortal-project, was a SKIRMISH on some world I couldnGÇÖt remember the name. Not that I couldnGÇÖt I just didnGÇÖt care to do so. Cockiness and being brash are usually the downfall of the inexperienced. Did I get my KITTEN whooped!

I went in with a dropsuit -nothing but a bare dropsuit. By the time the medics found my final clone I was 56 clones down and when the medics mounted them all up on a pile. It looked like mound of Swiss cheese. Swiss KITTEN-ing cheese! I learned from my experience which I hope you will as well.
First offGǪ Dropsuits: There are several variations of dropsuits and each is unique for specific details. I will only speak of the few I know personally. There are more and chances are by the time you read this there will probably be a whole new lineup of dropsuitsGǪ still waitingGǪ come on CCP make it happen! I want a Tanooki Suit (Mario Bros. 3 reference).
Assault: Your standard dropsuit.
Heavy: Packs a punch in terms of durability, yet slow as a dropship lying on its side. GǪTrust me I know all about dropships lying on its side.
Scout: Lighter in terms of defenses, but quicker than the dickens compared to other dropsuits. What does GǣdickensGǥ even meanGǪ
//TRANSMISSION INTERRUPTED//
//UPLINK RECONNECTTED//
//TRANSMISSION CONNECTED//
GǪ
The term "the dickens" means "to the point of ridiculousness"
Therefore saying "quick as the dickens" means you are being ridiculously fast.
GǪ
Thank goodness for the mighty Amarr lord-god Google. Hallowed be his godly intelligence.
As I was saying...
Logistics: Lacks firepower has decent protection and is as slow as a Heavy dropsuit pilot in a dropship lying on its side. So you might be questioning yourself why even wear it? Well because it is the PARACHUTE PANTS of the whole line up. This suit is filled with pockets to keep an assortment of items on you person, making you adaptable to any situation.
FITTING YOUR CHARACTER: Ever notice in your room that pretty diagram of a suit on your wall. Either via your Neocom or by investigating that diagram on your wall you can enter the FITTING MENU. By entering the Fitting Menu you can create/edit/delete Dropsuits. If you engage a dropsuit you will soon notice that on the reticule menu that there are several slots for entering equipment on your dropsuit. Now, here is where you shall succeed where I failed only by learning through rigorous bullets ripping through my being. You should equip your dropsuit with all possible equipment in order to aid in your survival. Remember I said buy MILITIA items from the market. Well, in the MILITIA department of the Market you can buy Militia variants of shield boosters or repairers, armor plating, enhancers for damage and accuracy, and many more useful items. Militia isnGÇÖt the best overall, but for a newbie like it was a blessing.

If I were you I would scout items for your character. It all depends on how you play your style.
Yet, outfit your character.
And remember, buy in bulk unless you can spend the AURUM and buy the BPO (Blue Print Original) of the Militia items so you donGÇÖt need to spend ISK on buying more. Word of Advice: BPOs are for Militia Equipment (and after being enlightened by Free Healer ) and Militia Weapons. You will notice if it is BPO by the blue frame around the picture of the item.
Once you get your dropsuit set you are ready for combat GÇôWRONG!
SKILLS: When I first started I jumped right into the midst of combat. KITTEN it, I am goddamn RAMBO! I thought to myself as I whipped my Assault Rifle and pumped slugs into a group of strawberries. Several things occurred in that precise moment. 1. I realized that either my targets where all KITTEN-ing Chosen from the Matrix and dodging my bullets or my gun was purposefully created to spray bullets in a pattern to outline my targetsGǪ apparently in order to instill fear GÇôI guess. 2. Once the strawberries realized I was there they decided I need air-holes in order to make my suit quicker. 3. They failed to realize that I should probably get out of my suit before they installed air-holes with their rounds.
After many clones and many defeats I realized that I needed to acquire ranks in skill to better develop my character. Skillpoints are acquired through fighting battles and can be spent in order to raise skills or open new skills. This can be done via the Neocom and SKILLS page or via the MARKET. I cannot tell you what skills would be best for your style of play, yet I can tell you that you should consider what path you would like to your training. Also Note: that some skills are unavailable to purchase or even view until you acquire other skills (usually they relate).
Thus this information should aid you before you drop from the MCC.
Remember that GǪ **A loud explosion rips through the receiver and after much white-noise the communication goes dead**
GǪ
**A blinking light on your Neocom flashes. You investigate it further and learn that you received an Email. The Email is titled KITTEN!!!! That was kitten-ing 57GǪ KITTEN!!! Why the hell did I join this immortal kitten again!?**

Great Stuff as always Jofur, looking forward to your next post xD (Kinda miss the Old speech pattern but i digress)
I'd like to draw something to your attention though. In your post where I have underlined above. It's a little difficult to understand your meaning here and i fear new players may be confused. Either that or YOU are confused but i doubt it.
1.) You CAN purchase BPO Weapons from the Marketplace.
2.) What you, Jofur, are stating that using said weapons is generally not a good idea as it is far more advantageous to use Basic Weaponry because it's cheap, yet more effective by a large margin than the Militia BPO's and you will find yourself having an easier time if you use them.
Did I get that right?
Keep the faith.

I vouch for the 'I am confused' because I have yet come upon BPO weapons. Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough. I only saw BPO for Equipment.
Thus, I do apologize if I confused anyone.
Being cheap for the new player, in my own personal opinion, is very advantageous. I only want newbies (like myself) to pick up cheap-O Militia weapons (if they can find it in BPO form all the better) prior to them spending great amounts of ISK on better quality weapons and finding themselves getting killed and poor within a few combat rounds.
