So I have had small play sessions in this game over the past couple months but I usually end up exiting after a game where every 10 seconds my frame rate drops drastically and then comes back a few seconds later.
I'm a computer programmer (mostly database programming) and I usually can tell the difference between lag and dips of framerate but I could be incorrect. I guess I wanted to post to see if there is something I'm missing because I expected to see A LOT more posts about this same problem since it usually makes my gameplay completely unbearable. I don't have a first gen PS3 but it's not a newer one but I couldn't imagine the specs being any different processing wise.
It could be possible I'm having latency issues but I play Planetside 2, Counter Strike, plenty of console shooters with NO latency problems what so ever. I pay for a 15 mbit connection which is pretty decent. Where are the servers located right now for beta?
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be great, thanks! |

As i am experiencing some framedrops for my self, i can tell you, the most drops come from the harddrice.. if you pay attention to you drive, you will see, that when something happens in the game for the first time (explosions, enemies, ship drops, etc.) the harddrive will load the data .. during a battle the harddrive will get less active but is still loading stuff.. as far as i can tell from my point of view.. other games may handle the data load better then this beta version i guess.. i hope this can be fixed somehow at sometime.. till then i suggest, you change to a SSD.. i am not using one myself, but there are some in this forum |

I swapped to an SSD about 2 or 3 weeks ago, WOW what a difference. First off, when I start a new game, I'm usually the or one of the first to hit the ground, during the match I don't see any of the glitching I used to see before, and in general everything seems to just "work better" sorry not very scientific.

Wow that is quite interesting I would have never guessed that.
Can I just plug in one externally through USB or do I have to do some internal messings around?
Also is there a way to see your ping in game? |

Interesting, So what's better. A 7200rpm SATA or a SSD SATA drive?
To switch out drives you need 2 things.
- The Hard Drive you're going to use in this case the SSD Sata Drive
- A back up external device big enough for doing a Backup and Holding the Firmware update. External HDD with Fat32 or Mem Stick with Fat32. PS3 will only Recognize Fat32 Externals

i just finished switching to an SSD yesterday. it hadn't occurred to me that it could make a difference. i did a bit of research and found this : http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-can-ssd-upgrades-boost-ps3-performance
basically, you aren't going to see an improvement because of the SATA3 speed of the Solid State Drive because the PS3 can't read/write data that fast. it's the super fast "Average Seek Time" of the SSD that lets the PS3 access lots of small files with very low latency. the drive in my PS3 slim was a Toshiba MK3276GSK which is listed as 12 ms. Solid State Drives are between 0.08 ms and 0.16 ms (75 to 150 times faster).

i did notice that the textures at the start of the game load faster and the gameplay seemed to be smoother. however, i didn't really notice load times being much faster and i still got a few frame rate drops in game play as i did before. i've only had the new SSD for a day. i took some video before the upgrade from cold boot to joining an ambush game and i've done the same after the upgrade. i haven't had a chance to edit them as split screen to compare load times, etc. i'm not sure if i can even share them here because of the NDA.

i have seen some improvements with the SSD but i wouldn't recommend the added expense to my friends unless they felt their current drive was particularly slow.
if you want to do the upgrade, it's fairly simple but it takes time. the drive i used was an Intel 330 Series SSDSC2CT240A3K5 2.5" 240GB Solid State Drive (SSD) around $140 before tax/shipping.
- get a USB hard drive that is at least as big as the data on your PS3
- do a full system backup of the PS3 to the USB hard drive (this can take a few hours)
- get a USB thumb drive. make a folder called "PS3" on it and a folder called "UPDATE" under that.
- download the latest firmware from the sony site and put that in the "UPDATE" folder (it's called PS3UPDAT.PUP and it's around 197 MB)
- open the PS3 and swap the drives (look on youtube for videos of how to do it for your PS3 hardware)
- unplug all USB cables from the PS3 and boot it up. it will ask you to connect a controller via a USB cable.
- the PS3 will give an error about not having an operating system. plug in the USB thumbdrive and press the [Start] and [Select] buttons and it will find the one you dowloaded and then follow the instructions to setup the PS3 like it was new.
- once the PS3 is updated and you've logged in (you don't need to sign into the PSN), plug in the USB hard drive and restore the backup you made (this can take a few more hours, maybe twice as long as the backup took)
that's it. i started my backup in the morning and after work, i swapped the drive and did the restore overnight. expect no to use your PS3 for a full day at least. (it depends on how much stuff you have on your PS3 now)

Woah woah woah where did the freak show come from?
Thanks for the suggestions/steps for the drive swapping, I will definitely look in to that. My problem might be a mix of that and maybe some odd latency issues, where are the servers located? |
